Cardverse!AU idea:

Arthur was only made Queen because Alasdair (who was supposed to take the throne)

1) Hated the idea for as long as he could remember and tried acting out to get out of it (it didn't work)

2) He was having a non-arranged 'affair' with the future king of diamonds (his parents thought this was him acting out and didn't believe he just loved Francis - either way he got out of being Queen).

Alasdair had to join the knighthood of the Spade kingdom. Dylan had been a part of the knighthood training for a year by that point, so they both were out of the running to be king.

If we say that Arthur is the youngest, Liam / Connor (N.Ire) likely was learning a trade while Arthur was just about to go into his mage apprenticeship - so technically Arthur was the only one left, and he was around the upcoming Spadean king's age. It seemed most appropriate in hindsight.

Long story short, Arthur knew the etiquette, but he pretty much had to learn how to be Queen on the job.

" So, why'd you call? Everything okay?"

"That is what I wanted to ask you." Alfred can practically see the furrow in Kiku's brow. "England asked that I call you."

That conniving SOB. Arthur must have struck it lucky tonight, but at least he is being a pal and not leaving him hanging. That is, as long as Alfred plays the hand he'd just been dealt right. He chuckles to himself, though he knows Kiku can hear him. "I'm fine," he says finally, "just a little lonely."

Kiku doesn't react immediately, making Alfred think he's piecing together intangible puzzle pieces. "Ah," he says simply, finally. "Well, I am still jetlagged. Maybe some company will tire me out."

Alfred isn't sure if the double entendre in Kiku's voice is his own imagination or not. Either way, he's pulling on his shoes and a light jacket before he has time to doubt it. "
