The secret pond is very real! It is mentioned in this article from March 11, 2024:

Will Smith still won’t reveal where he found the “secret little pond,” other than that it’s nestled amongst the trees somewhere in Lexington.

That secret pond in the Lexington woods is sacred to him. To me, the secret little pond in the woods in Lexington is where he retreats to when times are toughest on the Sharks. Physically, he's in his isolated corner on the bench scrubbing through footage on the iPad of his foot crossing the blue line a millisecond before the puck. But inside he's returned to the clean, quiet air of the secret pond. He's in control. He's having fun. No one can find him here.

Hurricanes’ Teuvo Teravainen delivering in the playoffs in his usual ‘sneaky’ style

There are too many golden deadpan Teuvo Teravainen interviews to pick a favorite. A few from this month alone still inspire a giggle.

But for some reason, one interaction I had with the succinct Finn after the Canes’ 2019 Eastern Conference final run always stands out.

Hurricanes coach Rod Brind’Amour had mentioned he thought Teravainen’s “compete level” improved during the season and into the playoffs. I approached Teravainen at his stall (ah, the good ol’ days) and started to ask him a question based on Brind’Amour’s comment.

Teravainen interrupted.

“Wait, he said something nice about me?” he asked. “That’s good.”

Then I asked whether the rumors were true — did his compete level change?

“I knew if it wasn’t good, I would have to have a little meeting with him,” he said. “We didn’t really have that meeting.”

Knowing what I know now about Brind’Amour and Teravainen, I wonder if it was ever really about the “compete level.” Brind’Amour often speaks vaguely about how understanding and relating to his players is more important than the X’s and O’s of coaching.

Maybe Teravainen is a rare case study into how that actually works. Because when it comes to the 27-year-old winger, who won a Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 2015, you get what you get.

He’s always going to hate practice, he’s always going to look for a pass over a shot, and he’s always going to be less than thrilled about speaking with the media. He could pretend to be enthusiastic about these things, but you’d know he was faking it.

He’s also proved throughout his career that he’s always going to play the same game — the kind where he could have a three-point night and you don’t really realize until after the game that he’s the reason for the win. He’s also proved more willing to shoot because of the encouragement of Brind’Amour and his teammates, and it’s been a great success.

Teravainen’s gorgeous, Game 5-winning power-play goal ended the Hurricanes’ drought on the man advantage at 21 minutes, 18 seconds and 0-for-12 — since Round 1, Game 6. And don’t look now, but Teravainen is leading Carolina with 11 playoff points, including four goals.

“We know the talent is there,” Brind’Amour said of Teravainen’s impact after Thursday’s 3-1 win. “He’s a sneaky skill player that you see on that goal. That’s a catch-and-shoot that not many guys can do at that pace and to put it in the right spot. Nothing bothers him. He’s cool. Does that help at this time of year? I think it helps because his game doesn’t change.”

Teravainen’s generally unchanged game, save for an extra shot or two, has kept the Canes afloat as some of the other heavy hitters have struggled to find their way on the road this postseason. But if Game 5 was any indication, Andrei Svechnikov and Vincent Trocheck might be catching up just in time.
