I have found that when I am surrounded by improv, I do my best work. During the day I’ll listen to a more “by-the-book” podcast or something more fun, like this one. Matt Besser’s Improv 4 Humans is super fun to listen to and study. He starts out by interviewing his guest and, along the way, they jump into scenes based off of their previous conversation. It’s a great one if you’re looking for a way to observe the rhythm of a scene, how others raise the stakes and play game, this is a good one!
The Mopes Trilogy, Part 1 (ep. 295)
Gene (Eugene Cordero): I don’t know the technical term, but...that frozen machine. Sanford Michael (Matt Besser): Cryogenics. Gene: Yes! Sanford: I’ve already looked into that. It’s bullshit. Gene: “Frozen machine.” “Freezer.” Sanford: People could think that’s a Slurpee maker, so. Just call it cryogenics. Gene: Well, I know the name of a Slurpee machine. I would call it a Slurpee machine.
[Three minutes later. Jess (Jessica McKenna) and Jon (Jon Gabrus) have entered the scene]
Gene: So if we can get you in a Freezer Machine -- Jon/Jess simultaneously: Like a Slushie? // Like a Slurpee? Gene: Come on.
