4: book/series you would never recommend

if you see a positive word about the andromeda evolution on this blog i have been HACKED that is NOT me. cannot fathom why you would look at a book (the andromeda strain) that plot wise and thematically hinges on the concept of a fundamentally random universe that in no way centers humans for good or ill and go "ok but what if it had evil aliens." on the other hand the extreme lack of diversity in tastrain is worth improving on but taevolution proceeds to shove every major character aside from the intentionally-boring white man protag into stereotypes and then kill them (except for his love interest of course). this isn't even touching on the portrayal of indigenous people. and im sure there's things I've forgotten or didn't pick up on the first and only time i read it several years ago. many other books i don't like or have misgivings about but i could still see myself recommending under some circumstance but really nothing to redeem this one!

17: weirdest book you've read

i mean it has to be house of leaves right. that feels kinda like a cop out but i really can't think of any other book like it that I've read. however, im going to give an honorable mention because i can to GORT, which was a self-published completely unofficial sequel(?) to the day the earth stood still that i found in a mailbox library in my parents' neighborhood. the author was a fanatic for the US military and the writing was terrible. never finished it.

Kate my beloved mutual I know this is bait I know you are out to get me because my initial knee-jerk response is to answer ‘Hux’ for all three but I will pretend to have a shred of dignity left just for you

10. Which character do you feel is most like you?

I feel like you’re pointing a gun at me and telling me to do a funny little dance. I’ve taken that ‘Which SW Character Are You” UQuiz like 3 different times and I’ve gotten Padme, Lando, and the Mandalorian, so I think it’s fair to allow myself the decency of being unknowable and assign myself Hux kin just for right now as a treat. We are both rabid engineers and we are both comically gay-coded and we are both under so much stress constantly that if we were load-bearing we would crumple and deform like little aluminum struts. Obviously I am not a fascist and I would not blow up five different planets to prove a point. But sometimes I do think about that gay little rat engineer and go ":^) i like him” so fucking search me I guess!!

28. If you could stop one character from doing one thing, who would it be and why?

I would literally take Qui-Gon Jinn, put a slugthrower to his temple, and tell him ‘If you leave Shmi Skywalker behind in slavery with a literal bomb implanted in her and maintain your complicity in the centuries-old tradition the Jedi have of utterly destroying the family unit, I will put this bullet in your brain.” Fucking asshat. If Anakin had one single person to show him genuine love and affection with no strings attached he would be literally so much less bonkers and I’m not even addressing how it was the fact that the Jedi and the Republic allowing slave trade to continue that precipitated his fall to the Dark Side.

29. Which character doesn't get enough credit or screentime?

Literally how could I answer this genuinely without saying Finn. Finn was robbed, we all know it, every single goddamn person and their mother knows it, but it still astounds me the level to which they have done Finn and John Boyega dirty. They literally had THE most revolutionary character, the stormtrooper, the faceless battle fodder, break free of literal brainwashing and indoctrination and through literally just the force of how fucking nice and loving he was, stumble into glory. We could have had Finn, patron saint of the stormtrooper revolution, and instead he got sidelined for a mediocre fascist white boy. It genuinely breaks my heart, the potential he carried that was just thrown away.

I thought the Goodcastle thing was a Fantasy!Nigerian prince email scam? If I'm remembering right, Fitz doesn't even know where Goodcastle is

If it is, it must be one with excellent PR. I mean, apart from Rainer and the other PCs, I can’t recall anyone else batting an eye when Fitz said he was associated with Goodcastle.

Or, well, now that I say it, it occurs to me that the other possibility is that Goodcastle is real and someone is using their name to scam people.
