#my REALLY unpopular hr opinion is that I personally like it when Shane and Ilya are on different teams

OKAY I'm glad you said this bc I was starting to feel a little insane about it lol, this blog is responsible for 98% of my understanding of HR sooo my perspective may be skewed in your favor, but I just FEEL like Shane and Ilya would never be happy being on the same team. Like where's the competition. Where's the back-and-forth. Idk having them end up in the same team just feels like painfully uninteresting even beyond the whole "hubby's readymade friend group" thing like you said. Shane would be so bored. He and Ilya together would destroy every team without trying, that's barely even playing hockey at that point, which is the thing that he loves.

Honestly I feel like getting to psychosexually torture each other with hockey is a huge source of their attraction to each other.

Like. They like being rivals. They like that they’re the only one who can really keep up with the other. They like being the only ones who can give the other a real fight. And they like actually giving each other that fight. All of that goes away if they’re on the same team. I low key think they’d start chewing at the drywall without the competitive outlet.

I want to be clear, this is all my own personal preference and read on the characters. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with wanting them to play on the same team; I just don’t personally want that. This isn’t any kind of not judgment on wanting them to play together.

I personally like the idea of Hollanov spending most of their careers going after each other with the most sexually charged competition in the history of hockey and the rest of the league is like. Do you. Do you have to do this where we have to see it. Like POV you’re a top tier hockey player living in the wrong time in history because you’re being choked out at every awards’ ceremony by two fucking assholes’ idea of foreplay.

I can see them maybe deciding to join the same team and launch the Husband Line when they’re in the last few years of their career and trying to squeeze one more Stanley Cup out of their careers. But I personally think they like competing with each other. I think they like having a rival who makes them fight for it. The fact that the other never lets up drives them to be constantly improving themselves.

Like. I fully understand, it’s hard to do long distance, but they’re rich enough to just fly private and still spend as much time together as possible. I will forgive them the environmental impact. They can plant trees. And, as many other people have pointed out in my comments and asks, it’s a lot easier to do long distance after the relationship goes public. They’ll have more freedom and flexibility to go see each when they aren’t having to come up with excuses as to where the fuck they are.

By the time Shane moves to Ottawa, they realistically only have 10ish years left in their career maximum—and only 7-9 years in separate cities if we do decide they spend the last few years They’re in the kind of profession where they’re tapping out young. Most people are retiring in their 30s. The oldest active player right now is 41. The oldest active player in history was 52. And he is the only nhl player to ever make it past his 40s. They’re going to have decades to spend all their time together. I personally think they can make long distance work for a few years and then climb into each other’s skin after they retire.

I also frankly just kinda think it’s healthier for their relationship if they have lives and support structures outside of each other.

I understand that a lot of the appeal of heated rivalry is that it’s an all-consuming, I-love-you-to-the-point-of-destruction kind of love. But uh. It can be an all-consuming love without actually consuming all. You can let them have friends who aren’t the other.

I just like them having their own teams and friendships and careers. I like them having their own lives. It doesn’t mean they love each other any less. I personally think having other relationships not tied up in the other can make for a little bit of a stronger and healthier love. Like. If they’re experiencing a rough patch, there’s never a concern that the other is only sticking around because they share a job and a friend group and every other aspect of their lives and no one knows who’s taking what in the divorce. You have options for happiness outside of the other person. It’s just that the other person is the one who makes you happiest. You pick to be with them again and again. It’s never about lack of other options.

I’m not saying the relationships going to be unhealthy if they live and work together full time. I just think it’s a little more vulnerable to the possibility.

I don’t think they need to be on the same team to have a happy ending. That’s just me. I like them having their own careers.

There's a recurring element in Dresden Files in which Jim Butcher will use pop culture references as a means of demonstrating whether a character should be considered good, likeable, or trustworthy.

Harry Dresden makes a lot of pop culture references. References are fun, and they help the reader feel more related to Harry. Likewise, these references are how Harry can relate to his friends. It's one of the primary ways he enjoys joking around with them.

However, the antagonists of the series, the vast majority of whom are supernaturally long-lived beings, have not bothered keeping up with popular works and media of the last century. They haven't bothered maintaining connection with the everyday human experience, the art and pastimes most people have in commonality and can bond over.

Madeline Raith has never heard of Buck Rogers. Nicodemus doesn't know who Peter Parker is. Drakul doesn't even know how baseball works.

This lack of interest in pop culture is equated to a lack of interest, connection, or care, for humanity in general.

References can be a signal for the reader that a character is someone to be trusted or empathized with before the story even confirms it.

Thomas wears a Buffy the Vampire Slayer shirt a whole book before he's revealed to be Harry's family in Blood Rites.

In Skin Game, Harry and Goodman Grey have a good-natured back and forth about the film The Black Hole several chapters before it's revealed they were secretly working together. Fittingly, the reveal itself is initiated by a reference, with Harry using "Game over, man. Game over" as a signal to drop the facade.

We learn Mab has been to rock concerts and Disneyland in Cold Days, the same book in which we're hit with the line, "I was mortal once, you know." Going further back, the first time Harry met Mab in Summer Knight, he makes a comparison to Godzilla, but he can't actually tell whether she understood the reference, which, in hindsight, she likely did.

And then we have Marcone, who, when faced with one of Harry's references, opts to ignore it.

"'Elvii?'" Marcone inquired. "The plural could be Elvises, I guess," I said. "But if I say that too often, I start muttering to myself and calling things 'my precious,' so I usually go with the Latin plural." Marcone did smile that time. It was a cool expression. Tigers with full stomachs wear smiles like Marcone's when they're watching baby deer play. "Ah. I hope you can find something to suit your tastes tonight."

“Do you at least have a gun?” I asked. “Maybe you can distract her.” “I have a knife,” Marcone said. “Jusht like a gangshter,” I said. “Bringsh a knife to an apocalypshe fight.” Marcone gave me a level look and then said, in a much more conversational tone, “Honestly, Dresden. If you used your mind half as much as your mouth, you’d be running the place by now.”

John "Who do you think I am, I am not a charitable organization, I am a professional monster" Marcone, does not directly acknowledge the reference. He won't go as far as to pretend he's not at least passingly familiar with Gollum, or that he never watched The Untouchables. But he refuses to respond or play off of it the way one of Harry's friends would.

Doesn't change the fact that he does get the reference though.

It pisses me off to see the way some Star Wars fans are so dismissive of Reva, Third Sister.

She's complex. She's interesting. She's clever. She's intelligent. She's strategic. She's conflicted. She's traumatized. She's scared. She's angry. She's a survivor.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series literally opens with her and her friends watching one of her Jedi mentors get gunned down by clone troopers during Order 66.

She was a FUCKING CHILD!!! They were in the middle of a lesson when the clones walked in and started shooting everyone!! These were Anakin Skywalker's troopers and they were executing every single Jedi around them.

These children had NO idea what was going on. They were scared and they tried to run to safety.

We remember this scene from Revenge of the Sith and we all immediately knew what it meant.

These are the same bodies that Obi-Wan Kenobi found when he and Yoda returned to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant after having to kill so many of Anakin's clone troopers just to survive.

These are children that the Jedi Council wasn't there to save.

Palpatine snuffed out the light of the Jedi in one swift act of terrorism and then blamed the Jedi for their own genocide after taking over the entire galaxy.

And in times of war, the weakest among everyone always suffer the most.

This is what Reva, Jedi youngling, remembers most about the end of the Clone Wars.

Anakin Skywalker, hero of the Clone Wars and former padawan of the great Obi-Wan Kenobi, murdered all of her friends and injured her.

She had to play dead amongst the dead bodies of her friends, and that's how she survived. She witnessed Anakin Skywalker murder all the Jedi in the temple with no one there to stop him because the other Jedi Masters were being executed in a war they had never wanted to enter into in the first place.

She blames herself for not being able to save her friends because she wasn't strong enough to fight back. No youngling was ever going to be strong enough to stand against Anakin Skywalker. She wanted revenge against Anakin Skywalker, and she was just as desperate to get to Obi-Wan Kenobi as he was. She wanted to kill Anakin Skywalker just as badly as Darth Vader wanted to kill Obi-Wan.

She was alone in a galaxy that tortured and executed surviving Jedi. She spent ten years plotting her revenge against Anakin. She was angry at Obi-Wan for not being there to stop Anakin, and rightfully so.

The Republic fell. Reva and her friends were left unprotected. She was the only person she relied on because everyone else failed her. She was only a child when she lost everyone.

And it's clear she was conflicted by her role as an Inquisitor. She doesn't have the training the other Inquisitors do because she volunteered to be an Inquisitor while all the others were tortured and terrorized into falling to the dark side. She only wanted access to Anakin so she could get justice for what he did to her and her family.

Unlike Anakin, Reva couldn't find it in herself to harm a child. She was seeking revenge solely against Anakin Skywalker. Luke and Leia are the same age she was when she watched her friends and family die in front of her.

Yes, she was prepared to torture Leia, but she consistently hesitated, and when Tala walked in, Reva turned away. She stopped. Yeah she was mad, but she didn't have to go through with it. She'd already planted a tracker on Lola. She was already planning on allowing them to escape so she could locate their secret base. She just needed to bait Obi-Wan. Her plan worked perfectly, and she didn't even have to hurt this child who was annoying the shit out of her (not realizing she was dealing with Anakin Skywalker's offspring).

She went to Tatooine to kill Luke, but she couldn't. She hunted him down without bothering to kill Owen or Beru. She only cared about one thing. Getting justice for what happened to everyone she had been unable to save at the end of the war. She was only a child, and when she realized she was about to kill a defenseless child just to get revenge, she couldn't do it. She saw her face when she looked down at Luke and cried when she realized she couldn't do it.

She was so horrified by what she had been prepared to do and returned him to Owen and Beru alive. She fell to her knees and sobbed because she thought she failed her family in the end.

Obi-Wan was there for her this time. He reminded her that by showing mercy, she was giving her friends and family peace. She was not going to become the monster that Anakin Skywalker was.

Obi-Wan helped her and reminded her that she gets to decide who she wants to be from this point forward. She refused to become Anakin Skywalker, and a weight was finally starting to be lifted from her shoulders. A weight she had been carrying for ten long years.

She did what she thought she had to just to survive. She had only been a child with no guidance because everyone she loved died. She survived by joining the ranks of the enemy so she could plot her revenge. Obi-Wan showed her mercy at the moment she needed it most. He wasn't angry with her. He was compassionate. She survived Order 66 just like he did, but she had been defenseless when they were thrust into a galaxy that tortured and killed Force sensitive individuals and those who helped them. He had failed Reva during Order 66, and he wasn't going to fail her this time.

She is getting a second chance at finding her path in life despite the bad things she did. Everyone deserves a second chance. She was robbed of her childhood and had to grow up overnight. She had to learn how to survive. And that's exactly what she did. Just not in the way she expected.
