Part Five(?)

‘They came back.’

I was tempted to go downstairs and try getting out now that they were here and would have turned off their security system, but I had no way to know which room they were in and sound travelled so seamlessly through the old house that they could have been next to me and not sounded any less muffled. 

‘Maybe when they’re leaving I can sneak out with them.’ After all, how angry can you get at someone sneaking out of your house? I could explain it all after I’d escaped. 

I bided my time, listening to them talking about buying new furniture and what to do with the old things. A female voice vaguely commented on wallpaper and a male voice proposed a coat of paint. Back and forth they went, on several topics, until both voices grew tense, then silent. 

Actually, it was silent for so long that I thought that maybe they’d left. I snuck down a step and peeked out. The older man must have walked away, he wasn’t in the living room when I looked but the woman still was. I froze when I spotted her. Thankfully, her back was to me.  

I thought I saw my chance to escape, they were both distracted... but before I could take just one more step down from the attic, another car pulled up the driveway and the woman turned away from the window and called for the older man. 

They opened the front door and three--maybe five, I still don’t know, I hopped back up to the attic landing when they opened the door--people filed in.
