As a matter of terminology, "in battle" is a mostly obsolete/archaic phrase.
The modern term is "in combat."
You will hear brass refer to events happening "on the battlefield" but it's usually in the poetic sense.
More often they simply say "in the field" unless referring specifically to active conflict.
Other terms used rather than "battle" include the following, but please keep in mind most of these terms are very specific to the circumstances in which they would be used: engagement, fight (firefight), combat, conflict, assault, attack, strike, raid, etc.
Honestly the list goes on, and the terms only get more hyper-specific. There's a term for EVERYTHING in the military, in the field or otherwise.
