"Are you serious," Emmaleigh asked, giving a half-nervous but joyful little laugh at what Jack had just said to her.

Jack grinned at her - a full, life-filled grin that wasn't the macabre grimace of a dead man. "Of course I'm serious - when am I not?" he said, brushing arms with her - because he could! It was a true enough point, though; even when he'd been normal he'd been a serious kind of guy. "We've been pretending for long enough, and there's no reason not to do it for real now. Emmaleigh Sherwo-oh I mean Lovett - will you marry me?"

If Jack had lived until he was a hundred - and God knew what was going to happen on that front now - he never would have thought he'd hear something so closely resembling and girly little giggle emanate from his not-wife's lips. But it did. "But you don't even exist!"

"But I'm alive and identity is so easy to come by these days, what with Bobby's connections and all."

"Shhh! We're in public, you idiot!"

"I don't care, because-"

"Because you're so alive right?" Em rolled her eyes good-naturedly, her face lit up by the biggest grin it could muster. "Okay, if, you know, you're so adamant ... Jack Sherwood, I will - Jack? Jack?!"

At her side, Jack's body crumpled suddenly, as if every spark it had in it had dissipated all at once. His skull hit the concrete with a sickening and slightly mushy thud but there was no reaction to what should have been significant pain. After the small bounce of his extremities, he remained stock still. People milling about the street turned to stare, gasp and one or two approached to try to help. Most just had a good gawp and carried on, though.

Em threw herself to the ground by her not-husband's side, furious at herself for allowing tears to well up and cloud her vision. No, this had to work! This fixed everything! She watched helpless as someone called for an ambulance and someone else felt for a pulse, knowing what they were going to find.

"He's ... I can't find a pulse! We need to start CPR, right? Right?!"

"No," Em said, though her voice came out as a barely audible croak, the life they could have had flashing before her eyes. 

Before she could summon the energy into her muscles to stop her, the woman was pressing down on Jack's chest. And so Em was forced to watch in slow-motion horror as the skin blackened around his face, beginning to depress and decay away. The rot spread ever outwards, infecting the poor woman who was trying to save him. In seconds she collapsed at his side, rapidly decaying, disintegrating into dust before Em's very eyes.

And then there was panic. Those in Jack's immediate vicinity each succumbed to his deathly power, all except Em. She could only watch, feeling the sapping energy pawing at her but not feeding  off her life force. 

She had to get him out of there. And she could only hope that he would wake again, the death incarnate that he once was.

ahhhh, I was thinking of The Diamond Age- I don’t really care for cyberpunk

I started that one awhile ago (I think I have the audiobook), and I remember mostly liking what I heard of it? That one's also more recent than the one I'm reading for class.

what are you reading? it sounds familiar and I’m wondering if I also read it and was terribly bored by it

It's called Neuromancer? It's one of the first cyberpunk novels, so theoretically I should like it, but it all feels outdated and also he doesn't take the time to develop anything, so I never know what's fully going on and I'm not invested in any of it.

So this is what has been keeping me going through night feeds. Basically a site that trawls through legitimate retailers of ebooks and sends you links to heavily discounted or free books on promos across the internet. You sign up for various genres and the site emails you newsletters with links to purchase. 

Not going to lie, they're mostly self-published nonsense (the free ones anyway - aka the only ones I've selected so far) but good for some mindless entertainment. Plus there'll be some gems in there somewhere.

Anyway, I thought quite a few of you would be interested.

actually I don't think so, he wouldn't really betray that stuff since it's more "mental break"
