Star Wars AU: Padme is LAWFUL good.
Star Wars Prequel movies would be, like, 110% better if Padme wasn't presented as this super lawful GOODIE TWO SHOES person that just ignored all Anakin's fucked up shit. Give the lady some serious issues but overall she still tries to do good.
Lawful. She likes when things fit into their places. Monarchy, Democracy, and Jedi are all examples of systems that have their rules and those systems work best when they're supporting everyone and not just the ruling classes.
Good, ish. Padme has good qualities partially because doing good makes things work better. You don't have the chaos of a rebellion if the common people are fed after all. She isn't exactly good for the sake of being good but she isn't evil either. Padme sees slavery as evil because it breeds chaos and suffering and there's no reason to do that other than for lining the powerful's pockets (which leads to corruption, Padme hates corruption, corruption is like an ungreased cog).
Overall she's good because she's lawful, not lawful because she's good.
Padme is, basically, racist/elitist against creatures/civilizations that she sees to be chaotic or uncivilized. The same feelings she has against the corrupt portion of the Republic is there against the Trade Federation and people like the Tuskans (and Gungans). So now when Anakin comes to tell her that he slaughtered men, women, and children Tuskans... It makes sense that she's all "yo, let's get married". It's weird that a super goodie two shoes canon version would just ignore genocide (which lead to theories about Anakin using the force to get her to like him... Ew). Padme comforts Anakin and says that in the grand scheme of things he did a good thing when he slaughtered the Tuskans (which, pretty much no one else will do).
She's Palpatine's right hand woman. Jar Jar isn't the one to give the speech and get Palpatine elected to Supreme Chancellor w/ emergency powers and all that. It's Padme. Palpatine represents stability and order, and he's a good man (in her eyes). The republic is corrupt and isn't working so she used the LAW to help fix it. This goes so far as to be a Father/Daughter dynamic (one that Palpatine will break if needed)
Padme has no clue Palpatine is a sith. Palpatine also doesn't need to use any force abilities on her because she's a willing ally. Palpatine is publically Lawful but Evil in secret so they align with a lot of principles on the Lawful/Chaos axis.
When Anakin talks of changing the republic, Padme is opposed to it because the republic is finally starting to work again. Anakin and Padme are BOTH still "good" at this point. However, Anakin is Chaotic and Padme is Lawful. When they talk politics they want the same thing, they just want to go about it differently.
Padme starts to get disillusioned by the Jedi when Anakin does, seeing the hypocrisy. Not only in how they treat Anakin but how they ignore things when convenient (ex: slavery). She actively supports Anakin's dislike for the Jedi, but does state that Obi Wan has been good to Anakin. She's close with Obi Wan because he helped her planet but the Jedi council as a whole is sus.
A change I would have is to allow Padme be the one to find out about the clones and relay the info to Obi. She was following some inaccuracies with money and learned about them. This is the start of her faith in Palpatine being shaken but it isn't broken.
What puts Padme at odds with Anakin is that she sees the Jedi Temple massacre. She has her moment of realization and self reflection that this isn't any different than the Tuskans. But she's sure she can stop Anakin from going further down the wrong path... When Anakin tells her that it's him and Palpatine reforming the republic into an empire, she breaks down. She did this. She helped put Palpatine in power. She sat by as Anakin did horrible things...
(the difference here is that instead of unwittingly causing this, she actively causes this. She's not a vapid horny airhead but a contributor. She's not the main cause, but she's one of them, Palpatine played everyone.)
Anakin chokes Padme, same as canon. This causes Palpatine to feel it and get distracted, Yoda gets a good hit in at this time.
Once the fighting is over, actively show Palpatine draining Padme's life force to keep Anakin alive (sith magic/artefact). He thinks that the children die along with her. This act is the final straw that fully pushes Palpatine over the edge. Sure, dude was evil before, but evil ppl can have connections. Padme was his daughter and he chose power over her and her children's life.
In canon, Padme is presented as this force of good but is just a horny airhead when it comes to Anakin. I love a good character flaw but daaaamn that shift is insane. Especially since Anakin x Padme was terribly done in the movies. I would much rather her be an active part of why the republic falls and not just because she happens to want Anakin inside her no matter what.
She's at fault in the original for being boy crazy, now she's at fault for trusting her father figure and for having flaws that isn't "I wanna fuck that boy who committed genocide even tho I think genocide is a terrible thing".
Padme also gets the lie she held for so long (racism/elitism) be broken.
