Snippet:

“I told you,” Ilya shrugs. “He hates me.”

Shane closes his eyes, miserable. “What does he want?”

“All he ever wants is money. Ira even said it.”

David watches his son's face shift through a dozen emotions in the space of a breath. The tenderness Shane has for Ilya hardens into something sharp and brittle, his jaw setting in that way David recognizes from every time Shane's been lied to, used, and manipulated by someone he trusted. It’s an expression he wore a lot back in Montreal.

"She lied to us," Shane says, and his voice is flat. "She looked us in the eye and lied."

Ilya's hands come up to frame Shane's face, gentle despite the tension radiating through his own body. "Sweetheart-"

"No." Shane pulls back just enough to look at Ilya properly. "She said she came here alone. She said nobody helped her. She-"

"She loves her father." Ilya's voice is steady, patient in a way that makes David's chest ache. "She will do whatever he tells her to do."

Shane's breathing is too fast. "But-"
