Oh wow, that's a compliment, that you want to read this fic when you don't know the concept of the Persona Series!!!

TGS and the Persona Series have a bit of overlap in themes. Maybe this short explanation will give some context:

Hyde is Jekyll's Personal Shadow like he is in canon. Shadows in that sense are a person's own feelings, thoughts, impulses, etc. they repress for any reason. Not all of them might manifest, but some do. And since those parts can be very different things from each other, Shadows tend to be beings of stark contradictions. How a person relates to their Shadow depends on circumstances.

And then there are collective Shadows: Symbols of many people in a location (which would be London here) sharing similar feelings, thoughts, and beliefs, spilling over and collecting into a sea in a dream-like realm. The idea that every mind is connected unconsciously.

From this 'place' in the loosest sense, Collective Shadows manifest: Like the fear of being watched and judged socially. Those feelings grow into shapes that represent those feelings. Even before I connected them to the AU, that's the idea I built the Bruit from.

Or they form from broader ideas of this population: Archetypes. Like Queens, Gentlemen, Justice, Might, Self-Righteous, or Order.
