The Role of Discord Meta-Games in Developing a Community-Assisted Business Simulation PC Game: An Ongoing Journey
What's the best way to implement a social game design strategy as an indie developer? We don't have the answer, but what follows is what we are doing:
At the beginning of this year, we started building our first business simulation game called Business Heroes: Food Truck Simulation. We think that the idea might work but needed the community to be involved in the design process to cater to our players' needs.
After thinking about the best way to get this done, we decided to set up an incremental meta-game called Burger Tycoon on our Discord server. It has almost all the elements of the main game we are developing, except that it is a text-based game.
Since keeping up might be challenging for many in the community, we made it into a monthly tournament. The first season of the competition ended July 31st, with players making several improvement suggestions and one player winning the prize of a $100 Amazon gift card.
We spent about two weeks implementing most of the suggestions made by players in season 1 and launched Season 2 of the tournament today. This time, we made the game-play model a multiplayer, team effort. One team will emerge winner at the end of the season (Sept. 30th). All members of that team will receive free keys to Business Heroes: Food Truck Simulation upon release. Also, three members in the winning team will receive $50 Amazon gift cards each.
We are happy to say that the most active players of the discord meta-game have also been the most engaged participants in the food truck simulation game's social development process. This fact makes us feel we might be on the right track.
We are still on this journey and hope to keep attracting people interested in guiding the development of our upcoming Food Truck Simulation game, while they have fun with the meta-game at the same time.
