Dada & film 4: Hans Richter’s Dadascope

A poetic film in which Dada veterans bring old tricks back to life, without dusting them off.

In this 1961 film, Hans Richter is back on track with his poetic film shots of objects and movements, from sharply lit objects to abstract shots, of human figures with masks and costumes. Old-fashioned, as in his Film Study from 1926, with his experiments with form and tricks in varied, but mostly fast montages. In Dadascope there is special attention for some of Man Ray's objects, such as that iron with the row of nails on the ironing surface ( Gift ), and the metronome with the photo of a woman's eye ( Indestructible Object ).

Man Ray, Object to Be Destroyed

Object to Be Destroyed was originally created in 1923. The work consists of a metronome with a photograph of an eye attached to its swinging arm. After the piece was destroyed in 1957, later remakes in multiple copies were renamed Indestructible Object:

“Cut out the eye from a photograph of one who has been loved but is seen no more. Attach the eye to the pendulum of a metronome and regulate the weight to suit the tempo desired. Keep going to the limit of endurance. With a hammer well-aimed, try to destroy the whole at a single blow.”

Man Ray, who was born on this day in 1890, made many replicas of this assemblage with differing titles, blurring the line between original and copy.
