Veggi Manchow - India Bazaar
A long overdue Meatless Monday post. I bought this right before Easter at the India Bazaar, and I picked it up for a few reasons.
It's called Manchow, and I find that really funny, but it's a real soup.
It's veggie-based, and I'm always looking for easy veggie meals.
It's Manchester United Football Team themed!
I don't follow sports, but I love movies, and whenever I see Manchester United, I think of the Soccer Hooligans from Eurotrip, which is a raunchy, but extremely underappreciated film that everyone (over the age of 18) should see at least once. Also, fun fact, when I was traveling through Eastern Europe I saw a sign for Bratislava and nearly jumped off the bus to take a photo. Before I go off on a tangent about my love for Eurotrip, let's cook up some cup noodles!
Our grocery store in Sydney is one of its kind. We sell varieties of groceries of high quality at a very cheap price. We are the leading online grocery store selling authentic products from India.
Coconut Water
Coconut water is probably the greatest drink ever. Definitely top 3 at least. In India, you have those guys that have dozens of green coconuts on a large cart and use a machete to chop off the top and let you drink the water. Like this:
In the US, I'm limited to buying the cans of juice at the Indian store that have a little sugar and small bits of coconut added, but it's still awesome.
Either way, it's so cool and refreshing, and it tastes great. I could probably drink it for the rest of my life.
My parents and I made our biweekly excursion to India Bazaar, Royal Sweets, and H-Mart. India Bazaar, where we get Indian groceries, was actually not crowded for once. Royal Sweets is this Indian sweet shop. My parents usually get stuff from there too. They also, however, serve Indian food - mainly snacks, although they do have a buffet. I ate a samosa chat which was delicious. H-Mart was cool as always. We stocked up on produce, fish, and dumplings. One thing that impresses me about H-Mart is their efficiency, especially at check-out. They literally checked out all of our items in a minute while at American grocery stores it would take at least 5. Considering almost all of our items were produce that aren't scanned, that's impressive. Plus my parents like to buy some obscure things which amazes me even more. Those Korean guys have every code memorized perfectly while at Wal-Mart, the cashier has to look up every code if the produce doesn't comprise of bananas, apples, or broccoli.
Lahore Tikka House
Location: 1365 Gerrard St. East
J says: Mentally, it is still fairly difficult for me to separate the two aspects of this restaurant. The first is that the food is excellent. The flavours are vibrant and intense; the spice levels are several steps above most of the downtown Indian joints. The second aspect of Lahore Tikka is that the presentation is possibly one of the worst in the city. Styrofoam plates, plastic cutlery, tables and chairs. You must embrace the dilapidation. Or, at least, go during the hottest part of summer and pretend you're on vacation in Pakistan. Rating: JJJJ
A says: This place sort of marks where Little India begins and if you venture in despite (or because of) its ramshackle appearance, I don't think you'll regret it. Their patio might not look like much, with plastic chairs and a mismatched sari ceiling - but they play some good Bollywood tunes, the staff is enthusiastic and the food is terrific. Rating: AAAA
