The ancient heritage temple at Harishchandragad

HARISHCHANDRESHWAR MANDIR

Ganapati, Harishchandreshwar Temple is marvelous example of the fine art of carving sculptures out of stones that prevailed in ancient India. It is about 16m high from its base.

Around this temple there a few caves & ancient water tanks. The river Mangal Ganga is said to originate from one of the tanks located close to the temple. The top of the temple resembles construction with the north-Indian temples.

There are three main caves near the temple. The cisterns near the temple provide drinking water.

The Architecture and Carvings at Harishchandragad, Maharashtra

The architecture and carvings at Harishchandragad:

1. The Ganpati idol on one of the outside walls of Harishchandreshwar temple. This temple is built in Hemadpanthi style.

2. Shivlinga inside the temple and the Nandi behind.

3 and 4: Kirtimukha's outside the main temple and outside one of the other temples inside. Do read the interesting story of Kirtimukha's.

5. Kedareshwar cave temple. It houses a 5ft. Shivlinga.

6. Carvings on the ceiling of the Vishnu temple.

7. A 5 ft. Ganpati idol in one of the caves.

8. Carving of an elephant on the walls of Harishchandreshwar temple. There are carvings of female dancers too and carvings of no two dancers are same.
