An excerpt from my blog, A Bigger Camera, at www.abiggercamera.com. Link in bio. • It doesn’t look like much at first but it is astonishing nonetheless. A rampart of earth, grass covered with trees here and there rises up before you, a gap in the rampart beckoning you in. And you go in, and it’s all flat, mown grass inside, with trees. The earthen rampart continues inside you can now see, you are standing at the edge of a large circle that curves left and right away from you. It’s twelve hundred feet to the far side. This is one of the Indian mounds of the Hopewell Culture, the phrase seeming to be the anthropologist’s equivalent of “we really have no idea who these people were but they were connected with other, similar groups from here to Florida.” Most Indian mounds are just that, mounds. You can’t even be sure it is an Indian mound because it just looks like an odd knoll. But here in Heath, Ohio, they don’t fool around. Their mound looks to be a fortress of some sort, a wall eight to ten feet high with a five foot deep moat on the inside. It is most impressive. • • • #hopewellculture #indianmounds #newarkearthworks #healthpohio #archeology #anthropology #unesco (at Great Circle Earthworks and Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CF2-gPZlW1O/?igshid=wq6blvxaiyce
So when they dig into this small, unassuming mound, one among dozens of larger ones in the Cohokia complex just east of St. Louis, they found a young man and woman, side by side. How sweet! Then they found four makes, their hands and heads cut off. Oh. Then they found fifty-three young females, piled in two stacks. Uh oh. And they only looked at part of the mound. #cohokia #humansacrifice #indianmounds #americanhistory #buriel #illinois https://www.instagram.com/p/CD84cuIFHTq/?igshid=183686ax06pck
Did you know that six hundred or so years ago Indians built a city near modern-day St. Louis? Not a village, a city. Did you know that numerous human sacrifice remains have been found there? Cohokia isn’t a very cool place. #cohokia #indianmounds #indians #missouri #stlouis https://www.instagram.com/p/CD754AxFpg5/?igshid=ohskc1nkncuj
