Welcome to Night Vale: Cecil/Carlos Rating: T+ Words: 7119

It's a Welcome to Night Vale fic that feels like it could happen in a Night Vale episode! Love it. Now, don't get me wrong, I know the majority of fic could never be an episode and that's a good thing but this combines perfectly the things I want from a fanficiton (Cecil and Carlos and their perfect love being the center-point and a good end) with the things I'd love in a Night Vale ep. It also has creepy Kevin. Curse that Desert Bluffs!

goddammit cat i've read ONE SCENE

i'm serious. because of Things all i've read is the dramatis personae + act i scene i. it's nearly obscenely late so you're probably going to be getting a lot of other rambley nonsense about my life and my feelings along with hamlet talk.

the edition i'm using is the sparknotes no fear hamlet with opensourceshakespeare for hand text post reference. a lot of people trash the no fear vrs but i really love them, plus they look super nice on my shelf, all lined up in chronological order. (i'd take a picture but i'm not that vain). i really wanted to read hamlet before i went back to school because it felt like it should be one of those 'i read it the summer i turned sixteen' books, if that makes sense. and because i'm still !!!! about it go listen to incandenza's i.i mix. listen to it again. play it on repeat until 8tracks kicks you off due to copyright. it was completely unintentional on my part to start hamlet the same day, but i can't think of any better way to experience hamlet than one scene day by day with accompanying mixes.  

so i know this isn't exactly an original sentiment (see emma smith's itunes u lesson on hamlet if you want cohesive thought) but shakespeare is SO GOOD at using dialogue to create a picture. look at the first fifteen words in hamlet:

Bernardo. Who's there?

Francisco. Nay, answer me. Stand and unfold yourself.

Bernardo. Long live the King!

Francisco. Bernardo? 

Bernardo. He.

just fifteen words, most of them monosyllables at that and we know it's dark, we know it's cold, and we know both of these characters are part of the watch. that's economic storytelling. 

it's also really comforting to come back to shakespeare, even a play i've never read before, and just feel the way the language is in my head and my mouth (whoops am i getting dirty about shakespeare we'll never know). for the majority of the text, i don't even need the no fear translation, it just unwinds naturally and that's really important to me. i think i was watching ian mckellen on charlie rose with my grandfather and he walked about being fourteen, fifteen, sixteen and the words would just get inside his head like that. that's really important to me. 

other things from i.i include: horatio. wow, horatio. everything he says just feels so smooth, the language of it is amazing. and literally his reaction is 'let's tell hamlet about the thing we saw because it's probably important'. way 2 be a good horatio, horatio. let's talk about how horatio for me is some hot combination of warren brown and peter de jersey. (and sidenote: i'm watching broadchurch with the fam and whenever pdj and david tennant are on screen together i'm having a little hamlet/horatio moment). 

and GHOSTS. cat this play has set itself up from page one as a ghost story. you know how i feel about ghost stories. 

oh and MACBETH PARALLELS. please, all of them please. i haven't even met gertrude and claudius yet but my betrayer/kingslayer feelings are coming full force. i want to make a series of gifs or something with lines from hamlet imposed over macbeth or vice versa (don't hold me to this, the logical part of my brain tells me i shouldn't be making promises when i can barely see the computer screen).

which reminds me: sons of anarchy. cat, this show was made for you i'm almost 100% sure. hamlet told through dirty blue collar tattooed california biker gangs who's only religion is the open road, like. the series needs warnings for everything but off the top of my head: death, rape, really graphic pregnancy trauma, child abuse, violence, guns, drugs, knives, fire, body horror, stalking, um seriously lots of other stuff please i feel really bad reccing it when i can't give proper trigger warnings. i'm only on episode seven or eight but it's been amazing so far. 

still mad i haven't seen ben whishaw's hamlet yet: the life. the blog. 

and the last thing i have to do i remind myself i have to make a post on pregnancy and macbeth, and one post on twelfth night and shakespeare in love.
