This is my story, and how motorcycling has changed my life.
I’m Steph, 31 years old and currently „stuck“ in Bali.
When I decided that I needed to travel I applied for a working holiday visa for australia and it was accepted. The rules are that you have to be younger than 31- it was now or never! So I quit my job as a graphic designer and left on my travels in February this year. THEN CORONA HAPPENED.
I didn’t want to go back to germany, and stop my adventure, so I decided to stay here in Bali and wait until I can continue traveling in throughout Asia and eventually get to Australia when they open their boarders again.
C’est mon histoire, et comment la moto a changé ma vie. Je m’appelle Steph, j’ai 31 ans et je suis actuellement coincé à Bali. Lorsque j’ai décidé que je devais voyager, j’ai demandé un visa vacances-travail pour l’Australie et il a été accepté. Les règles sont que vous devez être plus jeune que 31 donc c'était maintenant ou jamais! J’ai donc quitté mon emploi de graphiste et je suis parti en voyage en février de cette année. ENSUITE, le CORONA EST ARRIVÉ. Je ne voulais pas retourner en Allemagne, et arrêter mon aventure, alors j’ai décidé de rester ici à Bali et d’attendre jusqu’à ce que je puisse continuer à voyager dans toute l’Asie et éventuellement arriver en Australie quand ils réouvriront leurs frontières à nouveau.

I went for another 3 hour trip and totally fell in love ! It's the best feeling ! A feeling of pure freedom and happiness !
Je suis allée faire un autre voyage de 3 heures et je suis totalement tombée amoureuse ! C’est le meilleur sentiment ! Un sentiment de pure liberté et de bonheur!
Whilst I have been travelling I have really got into surfing, I thought this would be my new thing that I can work on and improve while I’m here but then Bali shut down the beaches! So no more surfing for me.
I began doing tons of scooter trips, but then seeing big beautiful bikes riding around all of the time, I thought ‘why not try a proper gear bike?’
I grew up with bikes, because my dad had a few back then. I used to go on camping trips with him in his old BMW bike with a sidecar. Unfortunately he got rid of all his bikes a couple years ago.
So I have always wanted to ride a proper bike, but with no license I never had the chance to try it...
I knew Bali Bike Shops are not so into checking drivers licenses anyways, so I rented a Kawasaki KLX 150cc for a day, and let someone show me how to use the clutch and gears for 10 minutes - my first time ever!
After the short instruction, I immediately went on a 3 hour motorcycle trip with a friend, around Bali. The same day, when I got back home to rest for a little, I felt confident enough to go on another trip by myself again in the evening.
I went for another 3 hour trip - and totally fell in love! It's the best feeling! A feeling of pure freedom and happiness!
The next day I set my alarm for 5.45 am so I could go for a ride at sunrise.
From that day on, I rented motorcycles every few days for one or two days, and I had the best time just driving around and exploring the island by myself.
My favourite time to ride is definitely early mornings when everything is quiet and still but I also love to ride around in bigger groups. Its such a great feeling of camaraderie. The biggest group so far has been 12 people.
Since I was the only one with a phone holder on my bike, I was always the president/the leader !
Every time when I got back on a scooter, I felt really unsatisfied, and I instantly missed the motorcycle feeling! So I decided to get rid of the scooter completely and rent out a Honda CRF 150cc long term.
And this is where my new story begins:
I am now planning a motorcycle trip through Indonesia, as soon as the ferrys here are back open. This is going to be so exciting. I planned around 20 day camping trip from Bali to Lombok, to Flores, to Sumbawa and all the way back to Bali.
Can't wait!
Pendant mon voyage, j’ai vraiment commencé à surfer, j’ai pensé que ce serait ma nouvelle activité sur laquelle je pourrais travailler et améliorer pendant que je suis ici, mais Bali a fermé les plages! Donc plus de surf pour moi.
J’ai commencé à faire des tonnes de voyages en scooter, mais en voyant de belles motos tout le temps, j’ai pensé : « Pourquoi ne pas essayer une moto ? »
J’ai grandi avec des motos, parce que mon père en avait quelques-unes à l’époque. J’avais l’habitude d’aller en camping avec lui dans sur sa belle et vintage BMW avec un sidecar. Malheureusement, il s’en est débarrassé, il y a quelques années.
J’ai toujours voulu faire de la moto, mais sans permis, je n’ai jamais eu la chance de l’essayer... Je savais que les boutiques de motos à Bali ne verifiaint pas vraiment les permis de conduire, donc j’ai loué une Kawasaki KLX 150cc pour une journée, avec un moniteur me montrer comment utiliser l’embrayage et la mécanique pendant 10 minutes - ma première fois !
Après la courte instruction, j’ai immédiatement fait un voyage de 3 heures en moto avec un ami, autour de Bali. Le même jour, quand je suis rentrée à la maison pour me reposer un peu, je me suis sentie assez confiante pour faire un autre voyage par moi-même dans la soirée.
Je suis allée faire un autre voyage de 3 heures et je suis totalement tombée amoureuse ! C’est le meilleur sentiment ! Un sentiment de pure liberté et de bonheur!
Le lendemain, j’ai réglé mon réveil à 5 h 45 pour pouvoir faire un tour au lever du soleil.
À partir de ce jour-là, j’ai loué des motos tous les quelques jours pendant un ou deux jours, et j’ai passé le meilleur moment en conduisant et en explorant l’île toute seule.
Mon moment préféré pour monter est certainement tôt le matin quand tout est calme et immobile. Mais j’aime aussi faire des tours avec un grand groupe. C’est un tel sentiment de camaraderie. Le plus grand groupe jusqu’à présent a été 12 personnes. Puisque j’étais la seule avec un support téléphonique sur mon vélo, j’ai toujours été le président/le leader. Chaque fois que je suis revenue sur un scooter, je me suis senti vraiment insatisfaite, et j’avais le sentiment de vouloir faire de la moto ! J’ai donc décidé de me débarrasser complètement du scooter et de louer un Honda CRF 150cc à long terme. Et c’est là que commence ma nouvelle histoire : Je planifie maintenant un voyage en moto en Indonésie, dès que les ferrys seront de retour. Ça va être tellement excitant. J’ai prévu un voyage d’environ 20 jours de Bali à Lombok, à Flores, à Sumbawa et tout le chemin du retour à Bali.
