VincAdventure: WINDSOR CASTLE
Thursday, 22 October 2015.
I went travelling outside of London again. This time, Farid took me and Andita to Windsor Castle, Berkshire. We met up at Waterloo Station this morning, bought the tickets and hopped on to the coach. There was no specific time on the tickets, we just needed to get into the available trains. The journey had taken less than an hour, and that was why Windsor often considered as located inside London. It is not, but it’s common to happen that someone lives at Windsor and works in London. I knew a girl who worked at ISH and lived in Windsor, she took the National Rail trains every day.
Windsor was way quieter than London. When I’d arrived, the station was emptier than any I knew in London. We walked out of the station and down along the pavement, passing the habitation and shops. The castle was so close to the station, and we directly went in to the front office to buy the tickets. The price was £17.50, but as for students, the ticket is valid for a year. We only needed to get the tickets ink-stamped by the officer later when we finished the tour. So later if I took anybody to visit the Windsor Castle, I didn’t need to pay anymore. I believe I would take someone here later. Maybe. I don’t know yet. But there must be someone who needs to get impressed by an old castle and believed that they would see the queen hanging out around.
I saw the queen when I came into the castle area. On huge photographs along the way to the main castle. Well, it was a day when they still held a royal photo exhibition of the Queen Elizabeth II to celebrate her longest-serving reign for 63 years, longer than her great-great-grandmum, Queen Victoria. As someone who had just had this time living in the UK and barely had daily news about the British monarchy in her country, this was my first time seeing how Queen Elizabeth II looked like when she was younger and her previous daily life. So majestic. Yea, no wonder. She’s the queen.
We went into the State Apartments, and a huge room displaying dining and decorating ceramic plates welcomed me. Some of them were gifts from other countries’ royal families and government officials. It was all marvellous, I suddenly had got back to my abandoned imaginary worlds of Merphilia and Naraniscala (Dunsa, 2014). I remembered how the British monarchy had given a huge influence of me writing fantasy novels. Every room in this State Apartments was amazingly beautiful and… so “royal family”. I didn’t know how to properly describe it, but it was a pretty emotional to be in this kind of “royal family” atmosphere. I went to the ballrooms, the bedrooms, the dining rooms, rooms full of weapons, rooms full of royal family’s stuff, and every step that I took had seemed dragging me to this world of imagination where I lived in this kind of castle, as a queen. A knight queen. No, I’m not a princess.
I remembered one time when I was still obsessed with Benedict Cumberbatch (now I’m not obsessed of watching all videos about him, but to work with him instead, hehe), I watched a video about him and other British actors meeting the queen. I guessed the event was held here in the first ballroom I had gone into. Farid and Andita walked while listening to the audio-guides, I didn’t. I knew I would skip a lot of historical information about this castle, but I just wanted to get drowned inside my own mind palace. Sorry, but this was a great opportunity to sharpen my imagination, and yet grew my old ancient willing to write more fantasy novels. Probably. Not now. I’m loving psychothrillers at the moment. And I’m started to thinking about sci-fi stories. Not other fantasies yet.
I spent hours inside the State Apartments. Seriously, but the activity was really, really, just walking inside the castle. This. Huge. Castle. With bunch of interesting rooms full of amazing heavy-royalty-stuff. I could even feel this tiredness of walking from room to room, to several rooms, would be a daily life for someone living or working in this castle. I had ended up feeling don’t want to stay in a castle like this if it means I should spend hours for moving up to another room. An extremely beautiful house, indeed. But, no, thank you.
When I walked out of the State Apartments, I couldn’t find Andita and Farid. I’d guessed they were still having a tour with the audio-guides inside the castle. Then I moved to the Dolls Museum right beside the State Apartments. Oh, man! The first giant mock-up of the castle that had welcomed me in the front room was FASCINATING. I stood up outside the glass walls for a long time, just to stare at every tiny room in the mock-up. Those tiny rooms built inside the mock-up were really, really, DETAILED. So real! I could find myself moving to another imaginary world again, this time as a little girl living inside this tiny mocked-up castle. I could see myself jump from a room to another, sleep in a sweet bedroom, walk to the huge kitchen, take a shower in a beautiful white bathtub, move into a room where they stored a lot of expensive leather suitcases and take one to travel with. So majestic. There were also vintage dolls in this museum, a gift from the French royal family for the young Queen Elizabeth II. These dolls had had such beautiful fancy clothes and accessories. Sorry, Barbie, you don’t have it all.
I still didn’t catch up Andita and Farid once I’d gone out of the Dolls Museum, thus I sat on one of the benches that faced upon the land over the castle. You know, it was like the position where the archers were staying ready for attacking the coming enemies. Actually there was a canon near me. The land seemed so green and beautiful from up here. But, it was so windy out here and I needed to keep walking in order to avoid the feeling of getting colder. I called Farid and he said that they were about to enter the Dolls Museum. Then I walked to this wide green field besides the State Apartments’ back door. It was fenced but I could see the field clearly and have gotten this feeling of the Quidditch game field. Hahaha.
Farid and Andita joined me not so long later, then Farid had helped me recording the videos of me reporting from Windsor Castle and how I acted losing my broomstick Nimbus 2001. You probably had watched those on my Instagram gallery. Then we together moved to the other side of the castle. There was this huge cathedral, but before entering it we watched this short term of the changing guards. Yes, they were also existed here in the Windsor Castle. Then the cathedral had also been amazing me. I stepped on an ancient grave, because it was there lying under the floor. Then we entered the dungeon, and there were even much more graves of the important people in their era. In one of the rooms, I COULD EVEN STEP ON THE GRAVE OF MISTER HENRY VIII. Holyyy--- He was like a really powerful king years ago, and now he was there lying under layers of this floor! Indeed, Fellas, even the most terrific power has its own situational meanings. You should pay a visit to Windsor Castle, by the way. Farid said that the queen had usually preferred to stay in here than in the Buckingham Palace, hehehe.
We had skipped the souvenir shop for something much more interesting. It was a long hallway full of historical photos and news from the British royal family. Hooo… Now I felt like living together with the queen! It was so nice staring at those photographs taken so-much-years ago and read the news that once were happening. It was amazing they had kept these things and let people follow the previous daily life of the queen and the royal family. I saw Indonesia on some spots.
The three of us went out of the castle area, walked along the pavement full of tourists, and entered the shopping arena. Farid bought a cup of coffee, while Andita and I fulfilled the need of using the bathroom. Then we joined him at the café, and I bought this ultra-delicious caramel chocolate cake that the taste was so unbelievable so I didn’t mind to pay more than £5 for this cake making my tummy happy. I didn’t even have the courage of having it finished in a short time, so I took it to walk. We actually had been moving to the Windsor Lake when I’d not finished my cake. But, OH NO! We forgot to have our tickets ink-stamped by the officer at the exit gate back then! We could have passed this good opportunity to have re-entered the Windsor Castle for free later! Andita and I ran back to the exit gate and a lady officer helped us meeting the officer who would ink-stamp our tickets. We did it! We had had this a-year-free tickets to Windsor Castle! Yay! Yea, Farid couldn’t re-use his ticket. (1) He had graduated from the University of Greenwich and no longer holding this precious status of “student”, and (2) he would go back to Indonesia soon.
When we’d arrived at the Windsor Lake, there was a big group of white swans swimming on the lake, and they were QUEUEING. I posted a video of these swans moving in a line and a friend of mine had commented that in the UK even the swans are queueing. Nice sarcasm, Boy. We continued walking along the lake, pointing to the bridge that separates the Windsor and Eton. You’ve probably known the name Eton as referred to a prestigious school for boys where Prince William had spent his school life, together with Eddie Redmayne. Some students were walking on the same path with us and they looked… awesome. These little kids (well, probably going to be teenagers very soon) wearing sport uniforms, carelessly taking their backpacks, someone holding the ball, casually walking while talking to each other—pretty much reminded me of Julian and Dick from The Famous Five. This life in Britain is magical, all things had dragged me to fictional stories. Well, it actually happens every time. Haha.
I know you were hoping to read a story about me going into the boys’ school in Eton. But we had needed to catch the last train that was going to run in some minutes, so the three of us had only reached the bridge and taken some photos with those beautiful near-lake landscapes behind. Then we ran to the station in a rush and successfully caught the train to London on time. We enjoyed the dark side over the train’s windows along the journey home. Then a flash of thoughts had come into my mind and I said it to my friends; Hard to believe, but it’s already dark. I can even still picture it clearly, the moment when we’d just arrived at the Windsor and Eton station. The time flies too fast. It’s scary.
A big city kid needs less-crowded room too,

Nasyanya Lagi Pulang Kampung!
(#nowplaying Kisah Romantis – Glenn Fredly)
SEMARANG!
Doh.
Meskipun panasnya kadang ngga tau lagi 43 derajat,
