Every now and again when I'm talking about Sechs I end up pulling quotes from the novels to illustrate some part of my description of him and every time I'm like "Y'know I don't think I'm exaggerating how much Sechs seems like he's in love with Shu. I'm almost certain I'm downplaying it, actually."
For slightly convoluted reasons, I decided to reread the first volume or two of Infinite Dendrogram, which reminded me of something that's been bugging me since the first time I looked up ID fanfic. At time of writing, fanfiction.net and AO3 have 27 Infinite Dendrogram fanfics, including eight crossovers, of which only three are characters from other settings playing Infinite Dendrogram the in-universe VR MMO.
In my opinion, the core appeal of Infinite Dendrogram the light novel is not the characters or story, but the plot. Ray sure is a determined shonen good boy, and I do want him to stop the cartoonishly evil villains from murdering helpless NPC children or start a war of conquest or whatever, but I don't really care about that.
To me, the world of ID (game) is vastly more compelling than anything else in ID (novel). It manages to strike a balance between being a video game that sounds fun to play and having a power system that is actually fun to speculate about.
It's fun to imagine what kind of build you might go for, what kind of Embryo you might get to compliment it, etc etc, in the same way that it's fun to imagine what your Quirk might be or what D&D class you would take IRL. And yet, the ID (novel) fandom as a whole seems less interested in exploring that aspect of ID (game) than shipping Ray with other characters, or sometimes shipping two canon characters that aren't Ray but also aren't very interesting (in my opinion).
I cannot think of a single story about Ray that I would enjoy writing. I have repeatedly fantasized about writing a fic where characters from one or more other stories play ID (game) together; I even wrote a few chapters of one! I do not understand why that sort of thing isn't more common.
Side note: fanfiction.net only has a third of the ID fanfics, but it has almost all of the fics which don't focus on Ray Stalebread. I thought the asymmetry was interesting, but didn't know how to incorporate it into the body of this rant.
please read the infinite dendrogram light novels
What is a Gazef ?
Gazef Stronoff is a character coming from "Overlord"
A similarity between him and other character such as Meld Loggins (Arifureta), Theodore Lindos (Infinite Dendrogram) and Gazel Dwargo (Tensei Slime)...
... lead to this meme being posted to the Overlord Subreddit :
So I'm wondering... What exactly define a Gazef ?
Is it the nature of the individual ? Do they have to be in an Isekai ? The fact that they are powerful in their field ? Their facial hairs ? Their skin color ???
Are Dime ([...]Aristocrat Reborn in Another World) or Cabanela (Ghost Trick) Gazefs ?
I need to know ! And if anyone have any other Gazefs idea, let me know, I collect them :
