Journal Entry 2: Feminism, Outside of Tumblr
Back so soon, you are asking yourself? Well, I have already received information with the help of a "cringe blog" (I am familiar with cringe videos, and a blog format seems just as useful). I was already familiar with the idea of Radical Feminism, thinking before it was just an excuse feminists would used to make themselves seem perfect (e.g. "Oh she did something wrong? Well she's not a real feminist, she's a radical feminist so what she did isn't our problem!"). I now see that the different groups of feminism are just whichever problem (or what they believe is a problem) they are working on as a group.
For this Journal, I will be gathering all the information I've received about feminism outside of tumblr.

Liberal feminism is an individualistic form of feminist theory, which focuses on women’s ability to maintain their equality through their own actions and choices. Liberal feminists argue that society holds the false belief that women are, by nature, less intellectually and physically capable than men; thus it tends to discriminate against women in the academy, the forum, and the marketplace.
Problems Important to Liberal Fems:
- stopping domestic violence against women
- "equal pay for equal work"
Socialist feminists think unequal standing in both the workplace and the domestic sphere holds women down. Socialist feminists focus their energies on far-reaching change that affects society as a whole, rather than on an individual basis.
Socialist Fems Believe that
is what the patriarchy uses to oppress women.
Radical Feminism believe that the defining feature of the oppression against women is the male-controlled capitalist hierarchy. Radical feminists believe that women can free themselves only when they have done away with what they consider an inherently oppressive and dominating patriarchal system. Radical feminists feel that there is a male-based authority and power structure and that it is responsible for oppression and inequality, and that, as long as the system and its values are in place, society will not be able to be reformed in any significant way.
Separatist feminists generally do not feel that men can make positive contributions to the feminist movement and that even well-intentioned men replicate patriarchal dynamics. This is also seen as a form a radical feminism.
Womanists believe that the oppression between gender, race, and class are all bound together. Forms of feminism that strive to overcome sexism and class oppression, but ignore race can discriminate against many people, including women, through racial bias.
New Age feminism has emerged in the 21st century as both a continuation and response to Second and Third Wave feminism. In New Age feminism, a woman (or man) embraces the qualities in him or herself that have culturally been defined as "feminine" without shame, while still fighting against the discrimination women (and "feminine" men) still face in the workplace and other facets of 21st century society. This movement comes in response to a culture that "simultaneously claims to embrace the equality of men and women and at the same time seriously devalues femininity".
There are many more types of feminism (EcoFeminism, Transfeminism, feminism in different countries) and honestly the only ones that I really like the sound of is New Age Feminism and Liberal Feminism. Affordable health care and childcare for people all around the world is great, sexual harassment is an issue that needs to be stopped, and it seems like they have their plan pretty well thought-out.
New Age Feminism sounds really really cheesy, but if the world had a lot more love and acceptance then I could definitely see the world becoming a better place for everyone (not just women).
Next journal entry will be my findings on the tumblr-versions of these kinds of feminism.
