Libfems: equality!

Radfems: liberation!

Why isn’t it both? When males and females are equal, liberation of females is achieved. They both make perfect sense. By liberating females and women, we achieve equality with men and males by dismantling gender roles and sex based oppression.

These ideas seem to line up to me, so why is there so much contention on the definition?

Libfem/Radfem and Tumblr

I’ve seen a lot of posts about Radfems and Libfems, Radfems being seen as TERFs and haters and Libfems being seen like some kind of cop-put and used as an insult (I have fallen into that trap myself).

But it’s confusing to me because I learned these terms outside of Tumblr and they are … different than how they are used here. So I just thought I would share what I learned of them in my gender studies class, just for the sake of dialogue.

Radical feminism is a feminist perspective that is focused on the destruction of patriarchal systems. This involves challenging long accepted institutions that are ruled by male supremacy. There is often a strong emphasis on the eradication of gender all together.

Liberal feminism is a perspective sometimes simplified as “individualist feminism” because of the focus on individual choice as opposed to the destruction of systems. However despite it’s use as an insult, liberal feminism has focused on rights for women within existing legal and political systems and concern themselves with policies that benefit women.

There are definitely views that are more commonly associated and aligned with each movement, but from what I have gathered the average feminist is rarely one or the other. Keep in mind that there are many different schools of thoughts and titles within feminism and many of them take from these two. If you believe that the patriarchy needs to be destroyed and these systems of social and economic oppression need to go and be replaced … but in the mean time you want laws to benefit you and you want better media representation or what have you then you are mixing the two of them.

There are many kinds of feminism not mentioned here like Socialist Feminism, Goddess Feminism, Eco-Feminism, Equality Feminism, Post-Modern Feminism, Liptick Feminism, Womanism and so much more. A lot of them take parts of radical and liberal feminist theory and create something unique to themselves.

This is, of course, insofar as I have studied it, maybe you have studied differently!

People always accuse radfems for hating trans men and treating them like “gender traitors” when in reality libfems are the ones who act like that…

So I’m rather curious, why is it such a big deal that people are only interested in dating/being physically intimate with someone that has certain genitalia? I don’t see how this is offensive to anyone, how this could be considered gross is understandable since genitals aren’t so freely talked about and are considered “dirty”. I honestly can not wrap my head around this.

And yeah I’m referring to the discourse about lesbians who only date women with nature made vaginas, which exclude transwomen especially those who haven’t had bottom surgery. Like, I’m a lesbian and I find penis repulsive. Isn’t that enough? Why do I even need to explain myself? Why do I need to give anyone a “good enough” reason to not want to fuck them? Isn’t “because I don’t want to” enough?

If I may answer you,

I believe that people are upset at the fact that some lesbian women don’t want to date trans women in general rather than someone with a penis. Although some fighting transphobia disagree, I have seen many state “having a genital preference is alright and very common, while not wanting dating to trans women just because theyre trans is transphobic”.

Also, it really depends on how long ago the trans woman got the surgery. Doctor techniques are changing and getting better/more advanced. I’ve found articles of trans women talking about how their vagina looks exactly like a cisgender woman’s vagina, but I’ve also seen articles where it looks not quite like a cisgender women’s vagina.

Speaking from the words of others, you’re genital preference is fine.

Speaking from my own words, it makes sense to stay away from men and trans women for dating. It would be transphobic to ask a trans woman what her vagina looks like anyways.
