Initial Idea

For Beyond the Frame, I want to look at vernacular photography :- Vernacular photography is the creation of photographs that take everyday life and common things as subjects. For my project, I want to produce a zine on young people in London -  fashion, art and music culture. When trying to come up with an idea, I looked through instagram and kept coming up stumped because I couldn’t see inspiration taking a final form in my mind. However, during Photography A-Level, I had a love for zines and always wanted to make and sell my own. Combining this with growing up in London and having met so many different people and experienced so much in such a diverse and amazing city, why not capture it, as if from my eyes.

PHOTOGRAPHY MAJOR PROJECT 

Initial Idea

For my major project I want to focus on Interior Photography as that is what I want to pursue as a career once I’ve graduated. I want to take a series of photographs of how the semi-detached houses on my road are all built exactly the same, have the same structure and floor plan, but to document and express how design and attention to details creates a different atmosphere and makes each home look and feel completely different. The choice of wallpaper colour, floor boards or carpet, placement of furniture. I am interested in the placement of furniture also and how different people decide to organise rooms differently and what they use each room for. 

I am very close with my neighbours and so will start this project by taking a few rolls of 35mm film, just to get a feel for the homes and workout exactly what it is I want to photograph and where in the homes are good places to compare. I will then move onto to use medium and large format once I have a better understanding of the photographs I want to achieve.

PHOTOGRAPHY MAJOR PROJECT 1: Initial idea

My idea for Major Project 1 will focus around an incident that happened in my country, Cyprus in 1974, but still has a huge impact in many lives till this day.  On July 20, 1974, approximately 40,000 Turkish troops landed on the Republic of Cyprus’ coast located in the North of Cyprus, illegally invading the island in violation of the UN Security Council Charter. Bombs dropped by the Turkish warplanes created a huge chaos where people had to leave there the homes behind, as they feared for their lives. Parents were separated from their children, brothers and sisters from their siblings. Around 200,000 Greek Cypriots were driven from their homes and became refugees in their own country. To date, 1,619 people are still amongst the missing. Turkey still illegally occupies 37 per-cent of Cyprus’ territory. Consequently, this event played a huge role in my family since both my grandparents have lost their homes from this event. Thus, I have decided to focus my project on this event, and visit the occupied side of Cyprus and document my experience. We are allowed to visit the North only if with proof of identity (ID/Passport). I have already photographed destroyed churches and bombarded buildings, as well as beautiful sights that we have lost. This project will be presented as a documentary photographic project.

This is my first initial mock up of what the digi-pack may look like. For this design I was inspired by the word ‘midnight’ and took it in a literal manner which I then tried to link it to the song by making the characters get closer to each other from slide to slide.

Proposal

Initial Idea:

My initial idea for the project was to have an interview with the interviewee, given to us via our client Sean, to get in contact with, about the canal and river trust that she/he has worked with. The idea being that its based at Anderton Boat Lift which is a part of the canal and river trust. We would film an interview there as people know Anderton Boat Lift and the surrounding areas, This would make it easier for viewers to understand what the interviewee is talking about and would make it more appealing to them. We’d write questions of our own along with three questions that Saltscape want us to ask them and then inform them via email or phone call so that they know what it is we are going to ask them, This way they can think about their answers, in the mean time, as no scripts are to be used, That way it doesn’t look as though it been rehearsed as I want it to look natural. Throughout the footage i think it is important to have a change of interviewee so that viewers don’t get bored of the same voice and the same person and to have lots of cutaway of wild life and nature to make it more interesting than just someone talking to the camera.

Structure of the video:

The way I want the video to be structured is a fast upbeat video with upbeat music in the background. This is because if the music is slow or it’s just the sound of nature in the background, Some viewers will get bored and switch off whereas if the music and the tempo is more upbeat the viewers are more likely to stay and watch it. However I don’t want the music to be too upbeat as the music has to meet the criteria in terms of what its about, it’s no good having club music with nature because the two don’t work together. I think its best to keep the music and tempo at a steady paste that way its not slow and boring and its not too fast and confusing, its just right. Within this video the colours will be natural and bright colours to keep viewers interested and to keep it as as natural as possible. I think whilst the interviewee is talking they should give lots of facts and opinions to keep it serious so that viewers don’t get the wrong impression of it. However not too formal as I still want to keep it interesting to viewers not boring.

Interesting article by a music student. Highlighting the fact that as long as deaf people can feel the vibrations of music and understand the rhythm or beat of a song. I completely agree with the statement that you have to feel music to understand it properly it is not just about listening to it in an audible way. This has brought to my attention that music is definitely not just something that you can hear it is much more than that although it can go un noticed. I think it could be cool to use my idea of visualising music and bring incorporate this with the idea of vibrations, could I celebrate music in a way that isnt heard?

PORTRAIT RESEARCH:

Leland Bobbe- this photographer really goes well with my idea of doing a studio makeup shoot. I love the way he shows the two different sides of a drag queen, like an alta-ego. His exhibition is called “Half-Drag” and he photographs drag queens half coated with their drag makeup and then what they usually look like. This goes alongside my idea of hiding your identity with makeup, and makeup making you someone that your not or someone you may want to be. The composition he uses in these pictures is what i want to try out with my idea. With the shoulders slightly in the shot and a medium close up of their faces, giving enough detail and effectiveness to the photo. He also captures the light perfectly on their faces to emphasize the different between the two side. The light coming from the left hand side, creates a beautiful shadow along their features which gives great contrast. This photographer really inspires me to further go with my idea in the studio.
