A maybe interesting maybe embarrassing thing about me is that far too many of my current interests started out as basically instrumental goods to fantasy worldbuilding
I keep seeing posts of that girl (?) with the curly dark hair (Agott?) from Witch Hat Atelier and going “she’s just like me fr” so hopefully that’ll be the thing that finally makes me read the manga
Insane to me that Kvothe Name of the Wind wasn’t bisexual. I haven’t thought about this character in years but I was just reminded of his existence and had a very strong association between him and being bi, but then I looked it up and he apparently isn’t. Where did I get this from? Was teen me projecting? But also like… he obviously should be shouldn’t he?
I think the average Tumblr user exists in some weird flux between understanding gender isn’t real and thinking gender is a transcendent immutable most-important-thing-about-someone, thus ending up with a concept of gender as like this entirely propertyless yet supremely significant internal state one has. Needless to say this is an extremely effective discourse factory!
Just watched all of Blue Eye Samurai (finally) at normal and reasonable hours of the day (lies), and as expected it was extremely well done and Mizu is cool as fuck and the character work is amazing and the animation is amazing and so on and so forth, I'm sure everything positive about it has been articulated already by very smart people.
That said, I had one minor historical nitpick, which is that the guns are treated as way more of a new groundbreaking technology than they actually were in Japan at the time. Like yeah there's a few lines that recognize the existence of Japanese firearms, but then in the finale there's Fowler's whole monologue about superior Western technology having outcompeted Japan (and all the samurai seemingly having never seen a gun before) and that's all just so unbelievably wrong!
This show takes place in the late 1600s, this is over a century after Oda Nobunaga (notable for pioneering firearms tactics in Japan); guns are not a new thing! In fact, there's a significant period here where there are more firearms being produced and used in warfare in Japan than in Europe itself! By the time the isolationism in the show was implemented, Japan had an enormous domestic firearms industry, all guns wouldn't be originating externally. Yes, European firearms would have been more advanced by this point, but Japanese nobles and soldiers would certainly not be surprised by firearms or unable to deal with them (and likely would have some)
So yeah really good show but there should've been more/any Japanese guns
I feel like not enough has been done with the linguistic metaphor of “streaming” and that’s a shame, it’s a really pretty metaphor! We could have streaming services called Estuary or Rivulet Pro or something but nooooo
