COMIC BOOK BOOTCAMP PART ONE and INKING FOR COMICS!
Although I'm too busy for anything but workworkwork and a bit of sleep (occasionally pizza), and marathons of Mad Men (such a good show! I love to watch it again and appreciate the magnificent writing) I WILL be teaching two workshops in the new year.
All the information about the classes (location, dates, etc) are on the Bootcamp blog: http://comicbookbootcamp.com/upcoming-classes-january-february-2014/
It's only eight to ten days left before the next session of BOOTCAMP classes start: reserve your space right-the-heck NOW if you want to be in WRITING FOR COMICS PART TWO, LAYOUT FOR COMICS, INKING FOR COMICS, all taught by Ty Templeton.

There’s so much more to this craft than tracing the pencils and calling it a day. This course in the nearly lost art of inking and embellishing, prepares the student to work with different brushes, crow-quills, markers and alternative tools. We feature lots of hands-on exercises with textures, line-weights, contours, rendering, and light and shadow, all in service of telling the story, and the development of the artist’s personal style.
From classical geniuses such as Hal Foster, Will Eisner and Wally Wood to modern day masters like Walt Simonson, Danny Miki, Paul Pope, Darwyn Cooke, Chester Brown, and Kevin Nowlan, we examine the history and philosophy of spotting blacks, and making lines.
And we get our hands dirty with new penciled panels and pages by different Marvel, DC, Mad Magazine, Independent or Simpsons artists to ink – every HOUR! Separating planes is what separates the rookies from the pros. Come learn how.
Bring your favorite tools with you (markers, brushes, twigs, etc.), but we’ll find you something to use if you’re missing a kind of brush or quill, don’t worry.
LAST DAY to enrol in INKING FOR COMICS
I've blogged about the (continuing) importance of comic-book inking. I've linked to another who has blogged about the importance of comic-book inking. So now, I'm teaching a class on INKING FOR COMICS.
Class starts tonight, 7-10pm, and there are still a few spaces left. Click through to read details and to reserve a spot.

TY TEMPLETON WORKSHOPS starting Monday...
My new set of classes will begin next Monday January 16. I still have four spaces left in my WRITING FOR COMICS LEVEL ONE class. There's a limit of 15 for this class as I like to be able to hear from each student when we do a writing exercise; feedback from me and the other students is an important part of this class. (for anyone who has taken this class before and is interested in a re-take to be followed by Level Two in the next session; TCW director Sean Menard is offering a 50% off deal for Level One. Contact him [email protected] for more information and to reserve a space.)
Perhaps everyone heard my plea/complaint? My INKING FOR COMICS has had an influx of enrollment, but there are still some spaces available for interested students. All you need to bring are your own inking tools (I'll be supplying some as well) and enthusiasm; different skills levels from none to lots are completely welcome.
I had a great time with Wednesday night's SNEAK PEEK workshop FIGURE DRAWING FOR THE COMIC BOOK ARTIST; looking forward to running this class for seven weeks! The full 'official' class will begin Wednesday January 25 (a week's delay to make room for Wednesday's Industry Night premiere of Ramón Pérez's TALE OF SAND), and still has spaces available. This class will have a limited enrolment as well, as I want to make sure that all students are able to have equal sight of the model for whatever it is that I'm teaching.
(And I'd like to give a shout-out to model Rubie Laframboise who helped make Wednesday night's SNEAK PEEK such a great learning experience--looking forward to booking her again for a future class.)
Inking for Comics: I wish someone would teach people how...
In this age of digital inks and "just darken up the pencils", why do inkers matter? Why should anyone learn to ink? Click through and read what I think on the subject...

INKING FOR COMICS WORKSHOP
Starting Tuesday January 17, running 7-10pm each week, I will be teaching a seven week course on Inking for Comics, at the Toronto Cartoonists Workshop.
"Tracers need not apply. Comic book inking is a serious craft that employs a broad variety of approaches both philosophically and practically. The class will explore different tools, different styles and different methods of finishing a page of comic art from pencils. Students are encouraged to bring their own inking tools and while some familiarity with drawing is suggested, any level of skill is welcome."
