Before going to see Across the Spider-Verse or knowing anything about the film, I happened to be reading Inksplot by Gahan Wilson. The story is about a weird carnivorous black spot from another dimension that appears and reappears throughout a guys house. This being reminded me of The Spot from Across the Spider-verse. While The Spot is a person, the spot in the book is more like a plant. Once a character looks away from the spot, it disappears and reappears in a different place with new growth. I just thought it was interesting that The Spot and the black spot/blob are both these sort of all-consuming, inter-dimensional beings. Also, both atsv and the short story end on giant cliffhangers, where it's unclear how either The Spot or spot/blob might be defeated or somehow made less harmful. I can't wait to see Miles Morales and the other characters again, as well as what will be revealed, in the next spiderverse movie!
another note: (Spoiler warning for across the spiderverse and everything everywhere all at once⚠️) I also feel like atsv was totally referencing Everything Everywhere All At Once with Spot’s whole “you threw a bagel at me and also I’ve decided to basically become the Everything Bagel” thing. Which is so fun.
