The Strategy of the Inner Room..
I highly value passionately for God. Yet I often observe believers who are excited about the possibility of being used by God but who have no strategy attached to their passion. As a leader, I see them frequently. They remind me of my son when I first taught him to play Yahtzee.
If you've never played Yahtzee, it's a simple game with five dice in a cup. With each turn of three dice rolls, you throw all or some of your dice, trying to achieve a good combination of numbers; different combinations mean different scores. While luck plays a big role in Yahtzee, strategy makes a difference. The roll called Yahtzee is worth the most points, but it's the hardest combination to get.
On every turn, Lake announced that he would roll for a Yahtzee. Turn after turn went by, and he never rolled a Yahtzee. Several times I tried to explain the strategy of the game. He seemed to listen intently to what I was saying, but when his turn came again, he just rolled all his dice and yelled "Yahtzee!"
Lake never won a game of Yahtzee. He had no strategy whatsoever for the game, but he did have lots of passion.
In the same way, I believe many Christians get excited about the idea of being used by God to change the world. They walk around with passion, yelling "Revival!" I love the passion to change the world, but we're not going to change anything by yelling "Yahtzee!" every time. We need a strategy attached to our passion.
The most strategic thing you can do with your life is to plant it in the secret place with God. We are not called simply to work for God; we are called to love God with everything within us. Jesus made this clear when He addressed Martha and told her that Mary was doing the more important thing (see Luke 10:42).
If you want God to use your life, the most practical, strategic thing you can do is to establish it in the inner room of prayer. Allow the Lord to meet you in your secret place and develop your roots in hiding. It's important to have a history with the Lord that is hidden, that no one else knows about.
There are certain things God wants to release to you that He will only give you in the secret place. You can look in other places for them, but you won't find them. I recently read about a critically endangered bat on Silhouette Island, part of the Seychelles Archipelago in the Indian Ocean. These bats live nowhere else in the world.
If you had a desire to see one, you could travel across Africa, look all over North and South America, and search all of Europe, but you wouldn't find a Seychelles sheath-tailed bat. You won't even find it on the other islands of the Seychelles. No matter how hard you look, you will only find this bat in one place: Silhouette Island.
It's the same with finding certain things in God. There is an anointing that is found only in one place. You can go to as may conferences as you want, but you will not find it there.
God reserves certain things to be found only in the secret place alone with Him. If you want to receive them, you have to separate yourself to the inner room of prayer.
Banning Liebscher
“I have sometimes thought that a woman’s nature is like a great house full of rooms: there is the hall, through which everyone passes in going in and out; the drawing-room, where one receives formal visits; the sitting-room, where the members of the family come and go as they list; but beyond that, far beyond, are other rooms, the handles of whose doors perhaps are never turned; no one knows the way to them, no one knows whither they lead; and in the innermost room, the holy of holies, the soul sits alone and waits for a footstep that never comes.”
Edith Wharton, “Fullness of Life”
Henri Nouwen -- Our Inner Room
“Listening to the voice of love requires that we direct our minds and hearts toward that voice with all our attention. How can we do that? The most fruitful way -- in my experience -- is to take a simple prayer, a sentence or word, and slowly repeat it. We can us the Lord’s Prayer, the Jesus Prayer, the name of Jesus, or any word that reminds us of God’s love and put it in the center of our inner room, like a candle in a dark space.
Obviously we will be constantly distracted. We will think about what happened yesterday or what will happen tomorrow. We will have long, imaginary discussions with our friends or enemies. We will plan our next day, prepare our upcoming talk, or organize our next meeting. Still, as long as we keep the candle in our dark room burning, we can return to that light and see clearly the presence of the One who offers us what we most desire.”
Keep returning over and over again to that “inner room” where we shut the door, even if only for a moment, and sit in God’s presence.

Pregnant with a word from the Lord
“When you’re pregnant with a word from the Lord, it might be months, years, or decades before the word comes full term and you can deliver it, but you have a responsibility to carry that word until then. How you carry that word matters greatly.”- Banning Liebscher
“Not so, my lord,” Hannah replied. “I am a woman who is deeply troubled . . . . I have been praying here out of my anguish and grief.” Eli answered, “Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of him.”- 1 Samuel 1:15-17 (NIV)
In Chapter 8 (“What to Do When You’re Expecting”) of Rooted, Banning Liebscher states you’ll encounter the Lord speaking to you when you plant yourself in the inner room of prayer. Therefore, when you’re pregnant with a word from the Lord, it’s time to start preparation for His word to come to pass.
However, Pastor Liebscher observes, many times we press in for things. Yet, the Lord doesn’t give us what we desire at first. Rather, He give us a word. Many people, though, find themselves tripping up in this process. Because they don’t know how to carry God’s spoken words to them. And when Hannah received words of comfort from Eli, she rose and shifted her focus. While Hannah had yet to receive a child, she did receive a word. Physically, nothing changed. But, Hannah heard Eli’s words of compassion. She craved affirmation.
In addition, looking at the original Greek of John 15:7, Banning notes that the word translated “words,” rhema, refers to something uttered by a living voice. Thus, the author states, Jesus’ words include what He has said and what He is saying. Also, the word “abide,” the Greek word men o, means “to be held, kept continually.”
Putting the two terms together, Pastor Liebscher observes, we find we first access the realm of faith as we draw close to Jesus and hear Him. That includes what He spoke in Scripture as well as through what He speaks to us today.
In conclusion, we must do more than simply hear Jesus’s words. As we hold and keep His words at all times, they abide in us.

God wants to ignite a mandate on your life
“God wants to speak to us about who He has called us to be and what He has called us to do, and to ignite a mandate on our lives, but what is required is separation to our inner room.”- Banning Liebscher
“And Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets and said to him, ‘Get yourself ready, take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth Gilead. Now when you arrive at that place, look there for Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, and go in and make him rise up from his associates, and take him to an inner room.”- 2 Kings 9:1-2 (NKJV)
As Banning Liebscher continues Chapter 7 of Rooted, he state God gives us strategies and anointing specific to our calling. That takes place in the inner room. For example, Elisha sent a son of the prophets to anoint Jehu king over Israel. This took place in an inner room. As a result, in one day Jehu and his companions overthrew the evil, oppressive reign of Queen Jezebel. In this key moment, Jehu encountered God. And it forever changed the trajectory of his life.
Furthermore, Pastor Liebscher underscores, it’s in the inner room of prayer where God reveals His story to you. Banning explains:
“When you separate yourself to the inner room of prayer, the Lord begins to shift the narrative that’s been shaping your perspective on your time and place in history. You begin to see the story that’s unfolding. . . . God is not only unfolding a story on the earth, but He is also active in your live with His story. He is writing His story over you. He has a plan and a purpose for your live that is full of hope and courage.”
Today’s question: How do you sense God’s desire to ignite a mandate on your life? Please share.
