The Hermit from the Rainbow Heart Tarot. Acrylic gouache and ink on watercolor paper.
At the end of each calendar year I like to do a Tarot reading to greet the energy and possibilities that the New Year holds in store. This year, the card I drew to symbolize the energy of 2020 was The Hermit. At the time of the reading I understood this card as a reflection of my need to spend some time being single, focusing on myself and doing some introspective work. But now, given the circumstances of the global pandemic humanity faces, this card feels like it resonates on a much larger collective level. The Hermit is a card that asks us to withdraw from society, find comfort in solitude, and turn our gaze inward. If we’re willing to learn, this process can teach us a lot about ourselves. During this time of social distancing and shelter in place, what riches can we discover in our inner landscapes? What dark spaces within can we explore and illuminate? What sweetness can we taste in solitude?
