Could you reccommend me some Doctor Who OCs or OCs who have a Doctor Who Universe? I have one and am a bit shy so I don't know who to turn to...
Uh… Well… I’m not exactly the best one to ask about this… As I don’t collect OCs as I do with Classic Who characters, my knowledge is limited and I have a MASSIVE personal bias towards certain kinds of OCs (coughUNITcough) over others, but let me see who I’m following…
Of course in my UNIT fam, there’s @theotherlethbridgestewart and @childrenoftiime who play Kate Stewart’s (The Brigadier’s daughter) kids. They aren’t exactly OCs, as they are people who do canonically exist in the Doctor Who universe, but we’ve never really seen them (at least not as old as they are here), so they basically are OCs.
@videofaciempraeteriti of course is absolutely lovely and friendly and I’ve interacted with them a few times before u.u (They’re the IC wife to @doctorattackeyebrows‘s Doctor (all of them) so you can look at them being cute there!)
I of course can’t forget @thenihilistofthevoid whom I’ve been threading with a fair amount lately.
I interacted with one of @verbintenis‘s OCs before, and it was generally a pleasant time. u.u
@aurcral and @spacexlibrarian are certainly two OCs that I follow, but I haven’t interacted with so…
@justwatchmc is a sideblog to @shewhowalkedtheearth (A Martha that I SUPER admire, but haven’t really interacted much though I HELLA WANT TO! I have so many thread ideas for Martha, you have no idea) which has a hella cool muse, though nothing has been posted in a while, sadly.
I’m also SUPER curious about the ideas behind @the-twohearted-dalek, but they haven’t done much in a while either.
So yeah… I know that there are more OCs whom I follow and whom follow me, but I don’t know anything about them specifically, sadly. So… Can people help me out here and add some OCs?
By the by, have I mentioned that I love OCs? Have I mentioned that my Doctor Who villain multimuse… One of the reasons that it’s taking such a damn long time to make is because I have to make at least 6 OCs? And I have made many an OC for other fandoms in the past? Have I mentioned that I am always open to OC interaction, so if you’re an OC you really shouldn’t hesitate to try and interact with me? I would love to do it! I love me some original characters!
I wanna rp buut idk how
Well, the fact that you are sending this to me on a RP account seems to contradict you not knowing how to RP. But here is some general advice!
Pick (or create) a character you absolutely adore from a fandom you love! You are going to spend a lot of time with this character and with the fandom you are trying to roleplay in. If you don’t absolutely adore your character nor the source material, it will likely drive you nuts, and you’ll lose your motivation and muse. If you’re starting out I would recommend having a single blog for a single character. Multimuse should probably be something to consider maybe down the line. Either OC or canon character is fine. Just know that generally speaking, OCs have a harder time finding people to interact with.
Research and learn as much as you can about your character and your character’s world. For a universe as massive as Doctor Who, you don’t need to know everything, but at least have a general feel for your character and everything your character would know. Doing some research can really flesh out your character and their world. It doesn’t have to be too intensive, it can be just the basics to get a general gist. (I mean… I’m not in the military, nor is any of my family, but I’ve done enough research to have a general feel for the Army life. I’m not perfect, and I do sometimes look up the semantics of things, but it’s not like roleplaying is a quiz. People will forgive you for messing up every once in a while, so long as you’re trying.) Even if you haven’t consumed all media your character is in, at least be aware that it exists, and be ready to be able to pull from it if you need to. (Personally, a lot of why I keep an About and timeline page is so that I remember everything going on with this blog. It just happens to benefit my partners as well)
Learn the features of your platform and figure out how you want to organize yourself on said platform. Not all platforms work for all people. Personally, I can’t stand roleplaying on forum websites. I don’t like pinging. I don’t like scrolling through massive backlogs of stuff just to get to my thread. I don’t understand how to operate forums well, and so I hate RPing on them. I do however actually like Tumblr’s interface, though it does take some getting used to. Figure out how you want to use drafts (some people use them to save ask memes and threads they like as well as threads they’re working on), likes (I personally use likes to save ALL THE ASK MEMES! It probably drives people nuts but it’s just what I like to do) and the other features on here. I would recommend getting XKit. It is really freaking helpful for roleplaying on here. You don’t 100% need it, but it is certainly helpful.
Be organized! Not 100% necessary, but it helps people if they can easily find the information they need. Most RP blogs have at least a Rules and About page for a reason. Not everyone has, nor does everyone need a headcanon, relationship, taglist, or whatever page. However an About page is necessary so that a person knows how to proceed with your character, and a rule page is helpful for others understanding what your constraints and limits are. (Personally, I write my rules page for other people’s benefit, and not my own, I personally don’t care if people read my rules, but they are there so people will know my stance on ask memes, threading from asks, NSFW, OCs, multimuses, and whatnot.)
Don’t be afraid to reach out to others for interactions. I’m terrible at doing this for myself, but most people are more than happy to try interacting with your character. So don’t be afraid to put yourself out there if you have ideas for interaction! Honestly, I would say that you should try interacting with as many people as you can have ideas for. The more the merrier, and some characters may surprise you with their chemistry with yours! (Personally, I never would have guessed that Captain Mike Yates, an earthbound military hippy would have a surprising amount of chemistry with C’rizz, the bipedal talking chameleon assassin from another dimension. And yet it happened!)
Make friends with the people you’re interacting with. Even if you don’t really have ideas for interacting with a person, it is definitely a good start if you can become friends with other roleplayers. If you become friends with your fellow roleplayers, you always have someone you can rely on to send you stuff for ask meme prompts, to send you kind words of encouragement, and to come up with random tidbits, facts, and ideas. If you are friends with someone, they can always come to you with a completely off the wall idea for an interaction that could lead to somewhere fun for both characters! (just last week the mun of @human-and-zygon (lovely mun of a fantastic Osgood by the by, shout out) told me that Tom Osgood and my character opened a tea shop together. This has led to a lot of fun, silly ideas and a whole new chapter of my character’s life. If we weren’t friends already, that may not have come up, which would be sad. D: )
Choose ask memes and make open starters that ANYONE can get in on! For me personally, one of my favorite ways to introduce myself is through ask memes. They can feel less personal, as you don’t have to introduce yourself and pitch your ideas to the other person, and the other person has no obligation to respond to it if they don’t have any ideas. They are low-stakes, but can be a lot of fun. Open starters are also a common way that people try to rope in new people, but can be intimidating if they aren’t geared towards people introducing themselves to one another. So try to figure out clever ways for characters to introduce one another without a direct, “Hello, my name is XYZ, what’s yours?” Additionally, a lot of ask memes are geared towards the characters already knowing one another. So maybe find a few where the two people can be strangers.
Being consistent... This is the thing that I am literally worst at. As with anything, the more you do it, the better you get. And the more people can rely on you to answer their responses in a timely manner, the more people will like and want to interact with you. I am horrible at this. I am terrible at this. Don’t be me. I take literal years to get back to you. I am terrible. Be better than me. Be consistent. Post frequently. Have a quick turnaround. I’m sorry, everyone.
Don’t forget to relax and have some fun! This is a hobby after all. No one ever made a living off of Tumblr roleplaying... At least... I’ve never heard of anyone doing that before... If you need a break, take it. If you need time to yourself, do it. If you need to delete your blog, you should. This is all in good fun, so don’t forget to do all the stupid things along the way. You don’t need to take everything seriously. Just do what you like and enjoy yourself, and hopefully you can make a few friends along the way.
But most importantly, DO IT! If you want to roleplay, the most important thing that you need to do is to simply roleplay. Sure you may not be good, but if you keep doing it, then you will get better. You don’t have fancy fonts? You don’t have icons? You don’t know how to program a blog? Doesn’t matter. Those are all extra frivolous things. Are you roleplaying? Yes? Then congrats, you are a roleplayer. So long as you are putting your ideas and character to paper (or internet in this case) and having another person respond, you are a roleplayer. This is how you roleplay. By doing. In the end, roleplaying is an action. You are either doing it or not. You can do it poorly, and you can do it well. You can do it quickly and you can do it at a snail’s pace, but so long as you are doing it, you are roleplaying. Everything above helps you be better at it, and can make things easier for you and your partner, but none of it matters so long as you are doing it. The methods may change and differ, but in the end so long as you have a character that is interacting with another, written by another person, that is roleplay. Just... DO IT!
If you follow even half of these, trust me, you will not just be a RPer, but a great one. I have rambled a lot, and I am probably a bit tipsy. So go fourth! And roleplay!
CAPTAIN WHAT IS THIS DR JONES HAS BEEN TELLING ME ABOUT YOU BEING DRUNK IN THE OFFICE AGAIN?
Katey! Kate! Kate. Kate.
Kate.
I’m not drunk. I think. Maybe? You would not believe how much alcohol I had to compensate from the men today? I think… I think! Someone had a hidden cache. Or they dug up some of the Brig’s old stuff. Good stuff. Had to inspect it. Goooooooood stuff. 1974. Good year. Was it a good year? Good year for whiskey, apparently. Goooooooood year. Love it. I’m not drunk! I haven’t been drunk in years! … I think… What year is it again? Who gave me all this whiskey? Did your father get me drunk again?
Saburo watched the Doctor talking with the Brigadier at a UNIT party. "They'll be talking for 6 hours, according to my future self." Saburo told Mike who was well-built, military and very attractive. He also knew the soldier was gay. Although one-night stands were not his thing, long-term relationships were difficult for time travellers. "Say, Captain Yates? Any chance you can take me back to your barracks?" Saburo whispered, trying to be seductive as he unzipped his scarlet trenchcoat, smiling.
Mike watched the party with passive interest bordering on boredom. At least the Doctor and the Brigadier seemed to be getting along for once, thankfully. When Saburo first spoke to him Mike glanced over at him with a curious, but reserved look. That was until Mike realized the implication.
Immediately, he could feel his face turning red with a combination of embarrassment and panic. “Wha… What are you suggesting!? That’s rather lewd, isn’t it!? You can’t just…! That’s highly inappropriate! I can’t just…! I’m not…!” he whispered rather frantically, trying in vain to keep his volume down.

He just stared at the bomb for a long moment trying to decide what he should do. Try to run away from the bomb, or try to disable it by ripping all of the wires out. But before making his choice, he couldn’t help but to make a single remark. “What the fuck.”

“Untie me!” The first time, Mike was still in UNIT and the Master was their enemy. While Mike had been unconscious, the Master had taken the liberty of binding the soldier’s hands. Surely their hands had touched as the Master tied his wrists together, one could hardly call that holding.
“Shut up! You don’t know anything!” The second time, Mike wasn’t in UNIT, and when he saw the Master, it was met with a sense of anger, aggression, and desperation. It was Mike who had thrown the first punch. But while the Master could see it coming, and knew that it would hurt, he let it hit him anyway. He could have blocked it. He could have grabbed his hand out of the air and broken it, but the Master didn’t. For a moment, even if it was out of anger and hate, they could have held hands, but the Master chose not to.
“Take my hand!” Mike was once again in trouble the next time, but it wasn’t the Master to blame. When the ground gave way underneath the former Captain, it was up to the Master to reach down and save him. Mike desperately clung to the rock and earthen slope, but when he reached one hand up, eager to receive a savior, he fell instead. He couldn’t tell if he had missed, or if the Master didn’t even try, but where he needed someone else to save him, Mike instead found only the empty air.
“It’s good to see you.” Years had passed since they had last seen one another when he was tempted again. At least they had for Mike, and when he saw the Master again, he was forced to fake a smile and pretend that nothing was out of the ordinary. He did not want to betray what he knew. ‘I’m sorry.’ it was the thought that ran through his mind over and over again. He had read the files. He knew what would happen to the Master and pitied him for it. How badly he wanted to reach out, and take his former enemy’s hand. To tell the Master that he didn’t blame him anymore, that he was sorry for what he knew he would do in the future. To reassure him that at least for now that everything was alright. But he knew that he couldn’t.
“Why don’t we talk somewhere else?” The last time, Mike knew that UNIT would be on their way soon, and the fact that the Master was there was mere coincidence to him. It wouldn’t have required much. Take his hand. Make him hesitate. Let him stay. Lead him towards those who would surely do him harm. He could have accomplished what he set out to do a long time ago. If only he was that person anymore. He wouldn’t do it. Not today at least. He wouldn’t hand the Master over to his enemies. He wouldn’t betray his trust. He had forgiven him and would not pull him towards those who would arrest him. For today at least, he could walk free, and he would never know...
“...” Mike smiled as he looked down at the Master. This was rather unlike him. After having lived with the Doctor, Yates knew that Time Lords did not sleep often. So to find the Master not just sitting at his bedside, but to find him in a fitful slumber was more than a little surprising. It was obvious that the Master had been sitting, waiting for him to wake up, but his head was against the bed, his gloved hands still clenched against the blankets. Silently, Yates snuck a hand out from under the sheets and placed it on the Master’s. He would make certain to remove it before he woke up, but for now at least, he was happy to show his gratitude for the Master’s presence, even if he couldn’t admit it to him while he was awake.
