12. things you said when you thought i was asleep
Nyx was a terribly light sleeper. He didn’t have a problem falling asleep so much as he had difficulty staying that way, and Cor often awoke in the middle of the night to Nyx reading in bed, or curling tighter around him, or pulling the covers back over himself because, “You stole the damn covers again, you bed hog.”
This time Cor woke up for no particular reason, which in and of itself was something because Cor normally slept like the dead. Something nagged at the back of his mind, a demand in a woman’s voice he’d never heard before, telling him he needed to be awake right this minute.
Cor wasn’t one to take orders, that’s why they made him the one who gave them. Something about the familiarity of the voice that yelled at him told him it was finally time to listen to someone other than his king.
One eye cracked open, and he became very aware of the sensation of being watched. He let his eye close, not even remotely concerned. Nothing Nyx did in the dead of night surprised him anymore.
Before he could react, Nyx flopped over and was snoring within seconds. Cor opened his eyes, staring up at the ceiling, seeing those words floating tauntingly in the dark. I love you.
They’d only been living together for several months, only been... whatever their relationship was for little more than a year. His heart thundered so heavily in his chest he expected Nyx to wake up again and tell him to shut up. The silence was deafening, but what made it worse was the fact that he kept hearing Nyx’s words echoing in his ears. I love you.
He swallowed, mouth suddenly dry. His thoughts were racing in his head, his stomach churned, a pain settled at the base of his skull. His heart was throbbing uncomfortably in his chest, his throat swelling at the idea of the words. I love you.
He shifted, knowing the movement would wake his lover, and draped himself over the Glaive, his entire body covering Nyx’s. The younger grumbled, face turning just enough to look up at Cor, one blue eye giving him a questioning look. Even after his shower, he smelled distinctly of spice and sandalwood, of the warmth before a thunderstorm. I love you.
“Alright?” A loaded question. One word, one question, one concern.
Cor’s hands roamed over the expanse of skin available to him. Rough, calloused fingers dragged along soft, warm skin, catching on old, faded scars, lavishing every ridge and bump with the attention they deserved. Nyx made a noise in his chest that could be equated to a pur if one had heard a coeurl make the noise before, and Cor held onto him a little bit tighter. I love you.
