There is something about an Englishman smoking his pipe.

And Roger Allam as Inspector Fred Thursday in Endeavour is one of those Englishmen. I, myself, am a part Englishman who smokes a pipe, so I permit myself this kind of comment.

Considering he spends most of the time on screen filling, lighting and smoking his pipe, it is shocking how few good pipe-smoking pictures I can locate. The above are two of the best. He also looks good with a gun.

Are we meant to infer from episode 3 (Rocket) that Thursday either liberated or was at in the aftermath of liberation one of the camps?

Because what he actually said to that Nazi engineer didn't mention rockets, or the Blitz, or bombing Britain, or the v2 project. He accused him of having been at a camp. Of participating in the Holocaust.

And then, when Morse asked, he deliberately lied to him and said it was about the Germans "flatten[ing] [his] street."

That suggests he's avoiding the subject of the camps with Morse - it's a vulnerable spot for him. Otherwise he'd have just told him the truth instead of deflecting witha quip- it likely would have garnered a much less disturbing response from Morse.

(Seriously, though, wtf Morse? The guy's a Nazi. You should 100% be with Thursday on this one. Ffs)

And clearly Thursday's not meant to be Jewish (is he??? I see no sign of it, but I've only seen 3 episodes. Is that where this is going????)

So why else would the Holocaust- not the War, not the Blitz, the Holocaust- be a hot button thing for him?

Because he saw it with his own eyes, and it traumatized him. (Not an uncommon reaction among liberating troops, from what I understand. Everyone knew what the Germans were doing, don't let anyone tell you otherwise, but there's knowing and then there's knowing, and seeing for yourself).

Thursday: Oscar (the grizzled former alley cat, who spends his days sitting at the window and keeping watch.)

Bright: Sir Fluffaluffugus the Fifth (the one with a regal air. Eats only the finest of canned fishes.)

Trewlove: Angel (the fluffy one whose long silky fur flies gracefully in the wind as she dispatches an unfortunate mouse trespasser. Spends her days grooming her fur, kicking ass, and taking names)

Strange: Gus (The easygoing one who dutifully tolerates the children dressing him in doll clothes and rolling him around in the baby carriage.)

Morse: "Pretty Eyes" (Picks one person to be his human. Hides from the rest. Occasionally appears in odd places, including ones that should be inaccessible based on known physical laws.)

Debryn: Muffin (the aloof one who can eloquently convey his opinion of your complete intellectual ineptitude in a single glance. But then curls up beside you when you are sick or sad to keep you warm.)
