Preferential voting is a voting system that allows voters to rank their choices of candidate in order of preference (see: "instant-runoff voting" in Australia). Such a system is very helpful in preventing the so-called "two-horse race" issue that is common in first-past-the-post voting systems.
Hey guys. If you’re a UK citizen and you’re sick of having to vote “strategically” rather than the way you actually want to because you know you’re throwing your vote away if you give it to anyone but Labour or the Tories, you should probably consider signing this petition.
Preferential voting means that you can make any party you like your first choice, but if you don’t think they’ll get in, you can always make the big party that you hate the least one of your other choices. You can read more about preferential voting here. It’s been working out pretty well for Australia for a long time already! There’s no reason it can’t work here in the UK, too!

(Seriously. Don’t sign this if you aren’t a UK resident. They check IPs on shit like this and people pretending to be from the UK when they aren’t in order to sign is considered “cheating”, which will suck the legitimacy right out of the petition. You might think you’re helping, but you aren’t.)
If this petition gets 10,000 signatures, the UK government must respond. If it gets 100,000 signatures, it will be considered for debate in parliament. Even if it’s unlikely to fuel any change, my main hope is that it’ll get people talking about preferential voting, and help them see that there’s an alternative to the broken system we’ve got in place at the moment.
