So here’s the deal...my entire life revolves around work. And I’m tired of it. I’ve been a vet tech for just about 20 years now, and I work 2 jobs, I belong to 2 professional organizations, I’m on the executive board for those organizations, I volunteer my time mentoring high schoolers and teaching little ones about being a vet tech.... I can’t. It is not healthy to keep everything revolved around work even when I am not at work. I am very PROUD of my profession, and of my accomplishments, but there is more to life than just work.
So, I’ve changed my Instagram and now my Tumblr accounts to both reflect on things in my life that make me happy other than work. Primarily, my girl friend, and our love for Archery!
Compassion fatigue and Self Care are more main stream topics in veterinary medicine these days. There is a very high suicide rate among colleagues. Studies in recent years have been done both in and out if the vet industry as to what the reasons are and more and more support efforts are popping up to prevent this. One of my favorite resources ever, is a dear friend and colleague, Dr. Susan Cohen, DSW. She has been truly inspiring and is generous with her lectures and contributions to the veterinary technician community in NY. She has taught me to make time for myself, and that it is not selfish to put self care first; in fact, it is necessary.

Dr. Cohen knows how hard I work. She knows about the 2 jobs, the long hours, and the constant volunteering. When I spoke to her about just wanted to step back from it all, she recommended getting a hobby. And by hobby, she meant an activity that I could enjoy, that :::wait for it::: had nothing to do with animals! :::GASP!!!::: What is she crazy?!?! My entire life revolves around animals!!! and THAT.. THAT statement is what made me realize,... that I was the crazy one. I simply can not revolve my entire life, all my free time, my evenings, my weekends, to my work and animals. SO....I picked up target archery.
SO, for anyone interested in giving this blog a follow, ARCHERY is going to be my main topic. It keeps me focused, it is FUN, I’ve started competing again, and best of all, my girl friend also shoots and it has given us yet another activity that we both enjoy. It started out as a date night through Groupon, and now we find ourselves competing in tournaments and owning our own equipment just 2 years later. I have to admit, I struggled for almost a year with some pretty bad target panic. I can’t wait to make posts as to how I over came that, because it was quite frustrating and I realize many people have had it as well in one form or another.
Well, thanks for following a long. I may occasionally post about being a vet tech, but it will not consume my thread. I’ve even changed my IG and now my Tumblr name, so thanks for appreciating the transition.
