During the lockdown, after losing my job in March, I was hoping to upskill and brush up some of my work experience skills with qualifications to 'prove' with a certification that I can do the things I have years of experience, but no professional qualifications, of doing. Like many of us, I started my professional career off the back of an unrelated degree, with some experience in similar fields that I was able to describe at interview as close enough to their ideal spec, but without the exact requirements a candidate who'd been laser-focused on that career and no other might have. I also know many others are in a similar situation; having entered a career before the current level of educational certifications were required, now having years, or decades of experience, but no stamped piece of paper from an institution to serve as an entry ticket.

I, perhaps naively, expected that a professional certification the likes of which I see touted by agencies, job ads, and on LinkedIn, might cost a couple hundred quid, or maybe £150. A textbook to help brush up before taking the test, maybe 25 quid. Nope! Try quadrupling those prices or more!

Education & certifications have become an absolutely gatekeeped (gatekept?) industry in this country for - as far as I can see - absolutely no reason but personal greed. It should not cost upwards of £1k to get the resource of a few hours of a tutor's time - especially virtually, now - and access to a mass-published textbook. There should not be a high, artificial, financial barrier to people actively wanting to improve their skills and what they can bring to market to offer employers; ultimately streamlining the process of business and reducing the effort of the employer to train. This is small-term thinking. The country as a whole is squandering a base of skilled, talented, motivated workers and community members by taking us for a ride likely to crush our spirits and trap those of us on the breadline in debt spirals for no good reason.

Or alternatively, the exact qualifications required by employers shouldn't be only these ones that cost the earth to obtain. In my view, that's pretty close to discrimination by the back door.

I'm now personally in the situation where I have over three years experience of my chosen career. I could pass a test, or sample task, that a prospective employer set me, to demonstrate my aptitude for the job. I could even, probably, pass a certified test. But to try out would set me back to the tune of hundreds of pounds I don't have. (And probably, knowing Universal Credit, studying for or taking a non-jobcentre-sanctioned course might risk a sanction for not 'actively looking for work' enough - who knows!)

From my perspective, I think this system is outdated, not fit for purpose, and creating unnecessary blockers to people who actively want to better themselves and become more valuable or useful employees. Much like the degree requirements for 'entry level' jobs now, this smacks of creation of an unnecessary barrier for short-term small gain with negative long-term ramifications.
