Stuck, he was stuck. That was the only word for it, the only thing he could come up with for what this was, his being here, trapped in here, no one around, no one he recognized. Doctors, nurses, medics, they'd all come in sometimes, check on him. Sometimes he remembered. Sometimes he didn't. Sometimes he spoke to them, asked about...things. About her. About...no. No, not about it, if he tried to ask about it, about...what he knew, what he remembered, it was trouble. Just thinking about it disturbed him, upset him, had him remembering all over again, detail by vivid detail what they'd done to him. Him? Or not him. He still wasn't sure, couldn't be sure, there was no way to be sure. They said he was David. They told him that often, like that would help him remember. Sometimes he got it. Sometimes, he felt like David, but other times... Other times he didn't. Other times, he felt like someone else. Other people, too many people. It was too many people for one body, and too many memories, too many experiences for one mind.

So he was stuck. In a rut. Never certain of anything except what he remembered. And when he remembered, it was painful. It hurt, it led to headaches, thrashing, screaming, and he didn't want that. It just led, in turn, to him being put out, then to waking up and having it start all over again. It was quiet now, he was quiet, everything was just silent and peaceful as they could be. He was simply sitting, fidgeting, trying not to think (can't think, don't think, don't remember). Unease grasped him tightly, held him close to that edge he was trying not to fall over again, but one foot was already hanging off, and he was teetering on the edge, almost waiting for a breeze to blow past and give him that final push.
