I really do wish there was a gender neutral equivalent to sir/ma'am. Like an actual embedded one in English that I could use and nobody would notice, just like nobody notices they/child/parent/sibling/mail-carrier. But honestly I would probably take a new word if it had enough traction that I would still come across as respectful.

Like I just saw multiple people recommend Mx. and it doesn't work? Mx. is the equivalent of Mr./Ms./Mrs. You wouldn't thank your bus driver by saying "Thank you Ms." and you wouldn't get a customer's attention by saying "Excuse me Mr." so clearly Mx. doesn't work.
