Hey this is a weird question and idk if you'd know the answer. My boyfriend and I are both Asian but he is south Asian and I am east Asian. Is there a term similar to "interracial couple" but for people of the same race but different ethnicities? It's not like I need a term or anything, but I was just curious.
i’m not aware of any such term, sorry turtledove. since you’re the same race, but have different ethnicities you could be an, “interethnic” or a “multi-cultural” or “bi-asian.” since there’s no term, you can use whatever you’d like!
mini rant: here in the states, (only country i’m able to speak of) i wish we’d get rid of the notion of “race” and instead only use “ethnicity.” as race, is at best pointless and at worst, gives a false motive for racism and hatred.
it’s been used as an excuse to discriminate, even tho there’s not a gene, trait, or anything, that distinguishes ppl of one "race" from another.
thus, it’s not a meaningful or valid classification system.
it’s incomplete, take Mexican’s for example, there’s no “Latino Race”, so what are they to choose? anyone with European ancestry is White and most Mexicans have some Spanish ancestry, but most also are part Native or African as well. So what race are they?
same goes for Brazilians? or Native Americans with no tribe.
even, ''Asian.'' as it includes such a massive array of ethnicities. everything from Filipinos to Chinese to Pacific Islanders to Indians. those ppl have different ethnicities and cultures, but they’re all Asian?
our census bureau already includes ppl’s ethnicity, so it’s time for “race” to be dropped
*steps off soapbox* thank you for reading my rant! :)
