( Creation + programming of Pearls. )
( refined with some help from @melancholeyes !! thank u, button <3 )
Creating Pearls is not the same as creating other Gems. The process is very similar, and yet very different.
To “grow” Pearls, the planets where Pearl kindergartens are placed must be planets that are 90-100% water. The conditions for creating Pearls thrive here, and Pearl kindergartens need to be created underwater. Where exactly they’re built is up to Nacre’s Peridots and the other Gems who help her run them, but she does do most of the work by herself. While Pearls are popular with elites, there is less demand for them than for other Gems, meaning that the numbers they are produced in tend to be at least half the size of other kindergartens, if not less than that.
Pearls require a more delicate touch and manual extraction, making it more pragmatic for WHITE DIAMOND to delegate their creation. Nacre was created for this purpose about 20,000 years ago -- around the time where owning Pearls got more popular among the higher classes. For a Pearl to emerge, they must first be told to do so. They don’t emerge from holes, instinctively, like other Gems do ; instead, Nacre must harvest the protective shells that their gemstones are grown inside.
Once the Pearls’ oysters have been removed from the kindergarten, one of two things will happen.
The first option is that Nacre will send one of the oysters directly to a Gem who has been approved to receive a Pearl. She will do a ritual to “bless” them with her influence -- which in reality is a programming of her own that lets them know to initiate the setup process when their owner says a certain word -- personally tell the Gem inside how much she adores them, and then ship them off with a guard. Included in the delivery is a sheet of instructions from Nacre on how to go about the programming process, step-by-step, along with the certain word needed to activate the process. When it arrives, the Pearl’s new owner can program the Pearl at their leisure.
The second option is that Nacre will program the Pearl herself. This usually happens when the Pearl’s owner is too busy to do it, or has a longer list of specifications on how they want the Pearl to be programmed. Nacre’s gemstone light will disrupt the typical process, allowing her to tell the Pearl who they are being programmed for and who they are to serve. After that, she customizes them down to the letter based on the specifications she’s gotten from the Pearl’s soon-to-be owner. Most Gems who choose to have their Pearls programmed this way do so because Nacre knows how to add in all the details, how to spend the time, and make this Pearl exactly how they want her.
The ONLY Gem who can override the natural process is Nacre. Pearls respond to the uniqueness of Nacre’s gemstone, intrinsically knowing that this is their Matron, not their owner. Anyone else attempting to program a Pearl cannot program them FOR another person. Trying to override the process without Nacre otherwise will simply result in the Pearl considering this person their new owner as well as the Pearl being set to default.
Nacre can also initiate a “reboot” of a Pearl -- meaning that she can reset them to default without the need for a physical rejuvenator. The majority of Matrons are able to do this, but only for their own Gem type, and Matrons are the only ones capable of non-physical rejuvenation. That is to say, even high-ranking Gems of the same type cannot rejuvenate one another. It’s an ability innate to Matrons for their daughters, and possibly the Diamonds. To do a reboot, a Matron usually needs to combine the light of her gem, a touch from her hand over her daughter’s gem, and a lyrical code that is different from any other Matron’s.
Once they’ve been programmed, a Pearl is very difficult to break out of that programming. In most cases, their programming can only be undone by rejuvenation. In the handful of special cases, the broken programming is caused by something Gems aren’t supposed to be capable of :
CHANGE.
