idk if this is anything but random idea bunny that popped into my head so here we go, I’ll dump the general idea here but probably won’t ever actually like, write the fic

Grumpy shitty attitude Gavin who uses the oldest functioning tech necessary spitefully even before the android revolution (post peaceful because my heart is soft)

and esp after too,

it starts off as a spite thing but he begrudgingly gets a bit into it, learning old operating systems and the basics of electrical wiring

Puts forth effort to not be an asshole to Connor and other androids so he won’t lose his job but steering clear of everyone

due to a poor reputation at the station this goes pretty well as few desire to interact with him either. His abilities make him to valuable to transfer, Detroit is in a state of mild chaos and they need every set of competent hands

Gavin ends up finding/salvaging an old computer system

takes it home and put some work into getting it started again, swapping out a few minor broken parts and finding a compatible charging solution sort of thing

while working on this stubborn relic of the past he talks to it, mainly starts as cursing and grumbling at it but eventually it moves to cursing and grumbling all about his work and the station and really a bit of anything

well eventually he does get the damn thing to turn on and boot up

it’s a bit different from anything Gavin can remember from his youth or find currently or honestly find on the internet

It connects to the internet (barely) and the user interface system, N.9N3.S, which Gavin refers to as Nines, is a bit like Clippy if Clippy had an attitude in the beginning

it’s odd but Gavin has the strangest sense that the thing is evolving more and more as he chats with it on the set up. learning and responding to Gavin with increasingly more self awareness

It’s weirdly advanced for an ‘ai’ of its time and he should be apprehensive but Gavin’s kinda curious and trying to get over his whole stick up on ai’s and androids and all that shit in general

it stays mainly confined on the giant ancient computer box Gavin had brought it in on but eventually Gavin gets curious and Nines gets also gets curious about the outside world so they try transferring it to Gavin’s Phone, his old Nokia

the Nokia doesn’t have enough digital space on it and Gavin laments that he’d need to get a recent more advanced iPhone which he doesn’t really want and isn’t in the budget for anyway

a while later a brand new iPhone shows up shipped on his doorstep. He does not remember ordering this.

he does not

His bank statements don’t reflect this either. He calls up apple to report a misshiped product. The company representative tries to process the order number that Gavin gives him and it doesn’t go through, Gavin gets transferred a few times to several different people and they all ask for the same information and put it into the system only to get the same results, that there is no record of the shipment

Gavin is frustrated and suspicious, Nines computer and operating system is currently turned off, he hadn’t turned it on since he got home and found the package.

he gets up and unplugs the main power cord from the outlet during one of the holds the rep is having him on.

he gets told to just hold and someone will dig deeper into the records, try and find a payment plan or connected account to the registration number of the phone and they will call him back when they do.

the next day at work Gavin is explaining the situation (only the phone, he avoids mentioning Nines just yet, something feels off) to Tina when Connor overhears him

the android asks Gavin a few questions and the conversation hints back to Nines and he’s so baffled by the situation at hand that he doesn’t act very hostile towards Connor

Connor looks curious and leaves shortly

When Gavin gets back to his apartment he still has no response from apple and hasn’t opened the package either.

he sees no other reasonable way but direct confrontation so he plugs the old computer back in and boots it up, cautiously.

Nines greets him as semi coolly as usual and notes that according to his systems it’s been a day plus since Gavin last turned him on

Getting directly to the point Gavin tells Nines about the phone, and how suspicious it is

Nines has no more idea then Gavin does of course, right? He’s largely confined to the computer and barely more than a bundle of operating systems ai code

Gavin is still suspicious

Nines urged him to not look a gift horse in the mouth and simply accept this as good luck

they go back and forth and for a few days Gavin doesn’t turn the computer back on eventually he does and feels guilty about leaving Nines turned off and ignored

meanwhile Connor is doing his own investigations, it leads him to several prototype android bodies, his next physical advancement iterations, all mainly parts with no ai’s to wake up or free.

eventually Nines convinces Gavin to open up the package and help him go through the procedure to transfer

now in more recent and advanced tech Nines goes through a sort of ‘transformation’ that he calls an ‘full software upgrade’ that makes him more similar to the modern ai’s more advanced and smarter and expressive and human like those ‘other’ androids than machine

(Gavin agrees that he’s certainly gone through a process and is more human like but something nags at the back of his mind, Nines had explained it all logically but… Nines doesn’t feel smarter, or like he got an upgrade, not truly. Gavin has a nightmare and in it Nines is the same as before but different, Gavin has the keen since that maybe he was masquerading before, like now he’s just switched out to a more expressive mask. When he wakes up the revelation is buried in his dreaming mind but the general feeling remains)

Nines is enjoying his newfound form and freedom, his better access to the internet and better look into Gavin’s daily life, carried around in his pocket and hacking cameras to observe the human from new exciting angles.

Connor talks to Gavin once, it goes civilly. The whole times a buzzing sensation lingers on the androids senses and it feels off

Nines is interested, he’d heard quite a bit from Gavin. Curious he attempts to jump from phone to camera to sensor to Connor

he stays for a fraction of a second before jumping back again through a different pattern and covering his tracks but the android still notices that something occurred.

With Connor distracted by this Gavin uses it to end the conversation and walk away

which is fine by Nines, he got what he was looking for

Connor doesn’t know what fully happened but senses that something is wrong and leaves, in precautions gets an evaluation and during makes a copy of his memory files

meanwhile the day ends and Gavin and Nines go back.

through the night several things happen.

When Gavin Reed walks through the doors to the station the next day he walks in bickering with his partner of several months, Nines, the upgraded Connor model from Cyberlife that was in beta testing and not released prior to the android revolution.

Everything is normal and as has been, Tina stops by to talk shit with Gavin and about him in friendly way with Nines. Hank tells them to fucj off and get to work.

when Connor walks in later, due to his later morning system reboot from his appointment the day before he stops

frozen and making eye contact with the unfamiliar android wearing something similar to his face across the bullpen. This foreign android smiles at him before dipping lower to say something to Gavin, his human in a possessive gesture while the lights of the build inexplicably flicker and the power trembles

Useless Things That Changed the World: A Brief History of Innovation Nobody Asked For

Every time someone insists that “generative art is useless and nobody needs it”, I have to smile. Because if there is one recurring pattern in technological history, it’s this:

The most transformative tools always start as toys, jokes, mistakes or pointless curiosities.

Humanity is terrible at predicting usefulness. We mock things right up until the moment we rely on them.

Let’s take a quick stroll through the graveyard of “absolutely unnecessary inventions” that went on to shape civilisation.

1. Video games — invented as a lab demo and student prank

The first video game, Tennis for Two (1958), wasn’t made to entertain anyone. It was a physics demonstration on an oscilloscope for visitors at a research lab. The second, Spacewar! (1962), was created by bored MIT students to show off how computers could move dots on a screen.

Both existed purely as technical curiosities.

Today, games out-earn the entire film and music industries combined.

Nobody needed them — until everyone did.

2. The internet — born from academic jokes and simple text transfers

ARPANET wasn’t created so humanity could shop, learn, date, work and socialise online. It was designed so engineers could send basic text messages between universities.

The first message sent? A crash halfway through typing “login”.

At the time, it was a low-stakes experiment. Now it’s infrastructure for global civilisation.

3. SMS — originally a technician tool nobody was meant to see

Text messaging started as a service channel for engineers to test mobile networks. It wasn’t built for people at all.

Then in 1992 someone sent the first “Merry Christmas”, and suddenly SMS became the foundation of modern communication.

A trivial feature became a cultural revolution.

4. Bluetooth — invented for a gadget nobody wanted

Bluetooth was created in 1994 to support early wireless headsets. Almost nobody bought those headsets.

Fast forward 30 years:

7. Memes — once cat pictures, now political machinery

8. YouTube — originally created as a video dating site

Yes, really. “YouTube” began as a place to upload a 30-second personal ad. Nobody used it.

Then someone uploaded a zoo video. Then another. And another.

Today YouTube is the world’s largest educational platform and archive of human knowledge.

9. Facebook — launched as a hot-or-not site for one university

A silly rating tool for bored college students. Now it is a global social architecture with political, economic and cultural influence.

Nobody predicted that outcome — because nobody takes toys seriously.

And now we have generative AI.

Once again, critics insist that:

“it’s useless”, “nobody needs it”, “it won’t be important”, “it’s just a gimmick”, “it’s not real art”.

Which is exactly what people said about:

photography, digital art, synthesizers, film cameras, word processors, Photoshop, computers, the internet

…right before each became essential.

Generative art today is precisely where video games were in the 60s, where the early internet was in the 70s, where SMS was in the 90s.

It looks like a toy. So people assume it will stay a toy.

But toys have a long history of rewriting human society.

The real argument is not about usefulness. It’s about discomfort.

Generative art expands access to creativity. And whenever creativity expands, some people panic — not because the tool is useless, but because it threatens their sense of exclusivity.

Just like cameras threatened painters. Computers threatened typists. Digital art threatened traditionalists.

Innovation always arrives dressed in the costume of a toy and leaves wearing the crown of necessity.

So no — generative art doesn’t need universal approval.

History is already on its side.

The world is built on things nobody took seriously at first. And generative AI fits that pattern perfectly.

The Authority of Money



During my recent trip to the U.S., I decided to play tourist and visit a few places that I had never been. One of the more interesting destinations was the Money Museum at the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago, Illinois.

    No matter how much it’s talked about in the news and politics, I really had no idea exactly what the Federal Reserve Bank does. I know its name is printed at the top of all of my Benjamin, but that was about the extent of my knowledge. With the help of a friend I’ve had for 40 years, I signed up to take the tour and get a glimpse behind the scenes of the place that money calls home. Knowing the amount of money that passes through the place and seeing the turn of the century style conjured up images of caper stories the whole time I was there. I couldn’t help but think  

“okay, if I was going to rob this place, how would I do it?”

 

The Guided Tour

While it was interesting to learn what the Federal Reserve Bank does, the real beauty of the visit was a special tour through some of the innards with a guide who knows trivia that spans centuries and literally trillions of dollars. Jerry, our tour guide, was a fascinating man who returned from the boredom of retirement to be a tour guide, talking guests through the museum.

    He wore a light green and white suit, looking like he too had been minted by the U.S. government decades ago. Over the course of the next hour or so, he shared background on the Fed, stories and more numbers than anyone should be able to recall.

In the main museum, we got to see a number of displays about the history of currency in the United States, including a couple of displays of One Million Dollars:

We also got to learn a bit about what the Federal Reserve Bank does in a video that was put together in-house – nice, but a bit dry. I’m sharing what I took away from it, which may be entirely inaccurate, due to my failing memory.

The Fed’s charter is to “oversee how monetary policy is implemented.” It comes down to three primary functions:

they oversee how payment systems work, so the way checks are cashed, the way credit card and online transactions take place;

 they are the regulators of banks in the U.S., so they’re the ones who go in and audit banks to make sure they’re not breaking any laws and

The most visible function is that they’re responsible for moving cash around.

    For most of us, that’s the fascinating part of what they do. Every day of the week, shipments of currency come from the United States mints to the Federal Reserve Bank. The Fed then ships that currency out to the banks that need it. While the larger bills are transported by armored car every day, the $1 bills are packed into unmarked semi-trailers and driven to the building to prepare them for distribution.

I guess it’s not much different from shipping a truckload of iPhones to a warehouse, but somehow it SEEMS riskier that they do that.

On the flip side of things, the Fed gets deliveries of cash from the banks, which is counted and bundled for re-distribution. This is also the step that includes pulling old and worn bills out of circulation. One of the most surprising things I saw was how little wear a bill needs for it to be taken out of circulation. Most of the bills in your wallet are probably not going to pass.

About $17 Million in currency is destroyed every day at the Chicago Fed, which is one of 12 Federal Reserve Banks. The Money Museum even gives you a small bag of shredded money as a souvenir, which contains the remnants of currency equal to about $370. One of the more interesting facts about this shredded currency is that until the mid 20th century, the shredded bills were burned, but because of the toxic chemicals used in the ink, they had to stop doing that.

 It’s now shipped off to special landfills for toxic materials. Kind of makes you worry about handling it every day, doesn’t it?

A Personal Tour

I had the pleasure of getting a more personal tour, including a trip to see the money sorting and counting machines (through a thick glass window, of course), but sadly the machines weren’t operating that day.

    Those functions are visible from an additional section of the Museum that was closed off in 2001, so not many people get to visit it.

    My other favorite part was looking at the high denomination currency that’s no longer in circulation. One display has a $10,000 bill in it, along with several other bills from the 200-ish years of American money printing. The 10k bills were printed until the 1940s and discontinued when it became apparent that virtually all bills above $1000 in denomination were being used for criminal purposes.

 Just over 300 of the bills survive, most of which are in the hands of collectors. About 9 years ago, one of them actually arrived at the Fed through normal banking channels! Someone had gotten hold of it (perhaps stored in a box in an attic somewhere), taken it to their local bank and deposited it. With a quick bit of research, they’d have discovered it was worth close to 10 times that to a collector.

    

I’d love to make a few suggestions to the guys at the Money Museum as improvements, but since this is solely for PR (admission is free), I’m sure they are limited in how much they invest in the tour. Although considering the constant saber-rattling in Congress about the Fed, maybe they could use a bit stronger PR push.

One of my biggest pet peeves with 90% of museums is that no one really thinks about photos. Placement of light fixtures to minimize glare, setting up obstruction free angles and allowing guests the chance to pose without impeding traffic are critical factors for any museum and most of them don’t think that through.

Re-open the closed section of the tour. Money counting and shredding is one of the more fascinating things that happens at the Fed and no one gets to see it. I get it. 9/11 happened. But the security checks and procedures keep out bank robbers, so I’m sure they can be effective for other people, too.

Tell some stories. Interactive displays are all well and good, but you’ve got an asset like Jerry who has hundreds of stories in his arsenal. I’m the only one who heard any of them. Everyone else just heard him introduce the video and rattle off a lot of facts and figures.

    

Stories = excitement. Spend a little money and create a new video to share some of these stories in the context of explaining what the Fed does.

All unsolicited advice, of course, but I found the place fascinating and woefully under-utilized. As an average tourist, there just wouldn’t be a lot to hold my interest without some upgrades.

Interactive Self Portrait

Our assignment was to create an interactive self portrait. This was extremely difficult for me to decide on what to do. Initially I had been working on a emoji mosaic tutorial that I had found online only, because it seemed really complicated and was very interested in the idea. I soon realized though that it wasn’t actually very interactive. The time required to actually render the video was impossible due to the time taken to calculate the colors and find a suitable emoji for the pixel location. This made me think about another solution.

I struggle to find a way to make what I wanted to make without heavily using libraries. We were challenged with making it using pure javascript if possible. I was then reminded of a contract I had made before, which was a simple PhotoBooth application that had a few requirements that were similar to this. I was required to create a Photo Booth that would take a picture with the push of a button and load the previous pictures next to it, similar to a camera roll. The picture would then push the image to a DropBox account and save to the desktop.

This in and of itself was extremely complicated because of the need for interaction between the browser and the computer for security reasons. I didn’t want to have to address all those issues once again so I took the parts I liked and removed the parts I didn’t. This left me with the idea of creating a Photo Booth that would take pictures but would maintain the previous pictures without replacing them. I could then add filters now because I was no longer limited by a restriction of buttons as I had been before. I also wanted to make it seem as though it was a wall that you could hang your memories on for the future. I created a mini cork board for my project to simulate the feel I was looking for.

The next thing I wanted to add was the feeling of pictures so with some styling and some randomizations to the orientation I was able to create a feeling of pictures.

I also added the ability to move the pictures around that way you could organize it.

I think a nice step would be to add the ability of having the user log-in and from there be able to add actual experiences with friends. A really nice addition would be to find a way to allow this to work with the iPhone facetime camera so you could save the memories on the go as well.

For my live site I chose to use what I view as the standard in synchronous sites which is Gmail. Google has for years been providing a synchronous experience with Gmail using it to constantly grab your mail the moment it exists without having you reload the page ever. It has up to the date information the entire time you use it. They even include Gchat/Google Hangouts which allows for chat and video conferencing service within the mail app. I believe the only initial delay you have between mail being received and you seeing it in the inbox is the parsing and sorting of the mail based on its topic or sender.

I love and hate google products, the use of machine learning has improved the experience but at the cost of privacy. Everything you say and do is constantly monitored by google through the use of every single product they make creating a single cohesive environment.
