i wonder if i imagined it as a kid, but i do distinctly have a memory of playing spore in space stage, fleeing from the grox at the core and resting at some near-core star with a civilization on it. i think they admonished me for 'bringing' the grox to them?

i need to try this again, see if i can replicate it.
