The Trailblazer’s Gambit

The first chessboard Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman played on was so light that a ceiling fan could scatter its pieces across the room.

It was an unlikely beginning for the woman who would become India’s first Woman Grandmaster, a six-time national champion and one of the country’s most influential chess pioneers.

Introduced to the game by her father at just three-and-a-half, Vijayalakshmi entered Indian chess when coaching, books, tournaments and structured support were limited—especially for girls.

There was no roadmap. So she made one.

“I’m extremely proud that being India’s first Woman Grandmaster has inspired so many young girls to take up the game and carry it forward,” she says.

Even in an age of engine-assisted preparation, she continues to believe in human instinct. Technology can suggest the strongest move, but it cannot replace mental strength, pressure management or the ability to understand an opponent.

Her career also gave her a passport full of memories—from daily walks around Lake Bled during the Chess Olympiad to discovering authentic Italian food during tournaments abroad.

Yet after years of travelling, Chennai remains home. Her preferred welcome-back meal is simple: curd rice, sambar rice, potato fry, appalam and dosa.

From a plastic board that could not withstand a ceiling fan to Olympiad medals and a historic place in Indian chess, Vijayalakshmi’s journey proves that one first move can change the board for everyone who follows.
