no, not a bad question at all!  a very good one actually and something i think about from time to time but i don’t think anybody has ever asked me before. 

the answer is hard though. it depends on the person and their level of emotional/mental stability and commitment, i think. 

my old blog really wasn’t “internet famous”, it was moderately popular in one particular fandom on one particular website. but if we’re talking a difference in audience/response - going from 15k followers to 1500 followers, which is what i did when i left - the latter is absolutely the happier place to be for me, and the better place for my mental health by far. i spent decades in multiple fandoms prior to that blog desperate to get noticed for my writing, for people to like me. and when i finally did, it was incredible. and it was also one of the worst things that’s ever happened to me.

internet popularity, even the tiniest and most insignificant kind like the type i experienced, can do a whole lot of damage to you unless you have the kind of personality that can handle huge amounts of hatred directed at you for no reason you can ever understand. you have to be the kind of individual who can handle knowing you’re being talked about in the most incredibly cruel ways by total strangers who know absolutely nothing about you. you have to be able to handle having everything you say picked apart and broken down and reinterpreted in any way that could reflect badly on you so people can get off on judging you every 5 minutes. you have to be able to handle people you have never heard of, met, or seen, making up ridiculous stories about you just to get noticed or get praise from the people who hate you. you basically have to have the ability not care what anybody thinks of you, ever.

on top of that, you have to be comfortable with huge amounts of (potentially undeserved, as in my case) praise and adoration from strangers, some of whom may take it way too far and make you very uncomfortable. some might write poetry to you, or imitate your work and ideas and your personal style wanting to be you, or build shrines to you (these actually happened, i’m not exaggerating). you have to be ok with massive amounts of attention, with people begging for help, advice, care, money, exposure - and it doesn’t stop. for me the hardest were the victims who came to me for help because they didn’t know who else to talk to, and being a survivor myself, wanting to help, i would wind up a hysterical mess trying to find the right things to say to these people who never stopped coming to me, trying to get them the help they needed while reliving my own trauma going through their stories. it’s emotionally exhausting. you have to be prepared for it, and i really wasn’t - and i didn’t know that until i was already neck deep.

you also have to be okay with the fact that some people will become your friend purely to use you to get ‘higher’, because they want what you have and think they can get it by association. and the moment you don’t have it anymore or you choose to leave it, they will drop you, brutally and abruptly, because you can no longer give them what they wanted. and if you’re the kind of person who has lived most of their life worried that their friends secretly hate them, the reality that some actually do will hurt like you cannot even believe.

this turned into such a stupidly long answer actually, i’m so sorry. but it’s something i think i have wanted to say for awhile, something that builds a bit in me each time i think back over the old blog or i see someone on here who is desperate for popularity like that, and i just wish i could sit with them and explain exactly what it entails and just how bad it can be. so thank you, for giving me the outlet to do that. and sorry about the rant.
