I am currently doing my homework for the next school year. School starting up always gives me anxiety along with a sense of dread. I have always had anxiety about doing things simply for the fear of failure or not being good enough. I realized a lot of things lately but mainly I have been thinking about middle school because my emotions and memories from that time were so suppressed. This was after my mom got sick and when she stopped being my mom. I started drinking energy drinks and immersing myself in school. I remember stressing and crying about grades as if I ever saw my middle school grades ever again. I stayed up until 3 am frequently to finish my homework. Anything was better than stressing about my emotions and things I had no control over. That’s what school brings up for me it was an escape for me and how I was able to immerse myself and often times I felt I had this alternate personality, especially in high school. I was often disliked and seen as a trouble maker, yet i was very smart and often got good grades. I always placed expectations upon myself to be the best. Reading the syllabus for a class like this strikes me with fear because I love writing. I love english and reading and words so much I can’t even explain. It’s the reason I hate group projects I hate letting others down or even letting them hear me and my thoughts because the rejection is always there, the “well no one else thinks or feels the same so I must be wrong.” With writing, I’m never wrong. When it’s just me and the paper whatever I say goes. I’m in control. Like she said in the article, writing is a way to not only relieve stress, but for me it has always been a way for me to have complete control when often times I had none. I choose the words, I choos the style, I choose the direction. I can choose the entire story. And that thrills me but with all this power comes the possibility of it being taken away. People have all sorts of things to say to me when I tell them I am majoring in English but none of that matters when I am writing and reading and gaining information and organizing it all in my head because then it’s just me and my information and at the end of the day, I choose what information I want to keep in my head. Often times those worries fears and doubts are the criticism of others that you have internalized. You can’t possibility be a writer. There are no careers in that besides teaching. Women can’t perform jobs. If I have to dismantle them all, I will one word at a time.
last thoughts of a woman on the brink (2018)

In twilight's dim embrace, she did return, A distant kin, long lost from the line. Her presence stirred enchantments unseen, Spells that whispered secrets from within. Darkness danced with her ghostly form, As whispers of magic swirled and stormed. Familial bonds, once thought severed, Were now mended, by a magic weavered. In every verse, she wove her tale, Of love and loss, in an arcane trail. The family's secrets were unveiled, By the magic of her enchanted tail. In under 100 words, this Gothic poem explores the return of a long-lost family member and the introduction of a magical system with spells and enchantments.
this whole piece is pure gold but these passages in particular are delicious

"Every few years, the publishing industry designates a crop of young writers as the internet-whisperers du jour, voices of generations that haven’t quite divided, cell-like, from the one previous…"
In Gabriel Smith’s debut novel, “Brat,” aesthetic flatness and empty provocation dominate.
