Lost my man-hating lesbian street cred today because in a class with like 14 girls and 6 boys, I had to kick 5 of the boys out because they wouldn't sit still. I had permission to do this and I tried everything else so out it was. So the class was left with the 14 girls and 1 incredibly well-behaved boy. And the class was manageable for once. So much better. I could actually get a couple of sentences in 😭

But the girls started talking about how much men suck and how the world would be better without men (they're right but I couldn't say it) but they were interrupting my class still so I told them "actually the best-behaved student in this class rn is [Boy's Name]" and they got all rowdy on me but eventually they shut up for a few blessed minutes (nothing riles a baby feminist more than the idea that a boy could be better than her at something).

I slipped up one moment when one of them asked what I thought about men and I went "I cannot say that during my working hours" (she LOVED that), but then I got scared someone will report me for misandry crimes so I talked up the lone boy in the class a bit (also the girls in general. I'm Ms. Liberal Feminist at school, but this one was strategic).

One of the girls also refused to do the work and instead was debating with her friend about how all women should go lesbians. When I told her that she was in English class, not in a Gender Studies class, she went "omg are you a homophobe? :(" lol. I of course denied that emphatically. But it's very funny. Esp. given that I live basically next to the school and they're always hanging out at the park that's literally in front of my house, so the chances of them seeing me with my girlfriend are not zero.

One of the English classes I observed today during my internship was discussing an excerpt of Dracula, and it was when Jonathan was having his scary terrible time in Drac's Taxi going around in circles and meeting some very friendly wolves. And I found it so nostalgic! It's been nearly half a year now that we've been following the adventures he and his friends have, and seeing what has happened to friend Jonathan since, it feels so long ago that he was first arriving at the Count's place.

One disadvantage of really good internships that I've noticed - you forget what it feels like to sit down and then you do and your body's like... oh... oh wow... I forgot... You can even rest your back? Holy... This is the best thing we have ever done. We should do this sitting thing more often.

Manager: *points at a pile of trash that includes a lawnmower, 150 pots, three pair of ice skates and a medieval hand scythe* Sort this Me: *squints at pile* ... Ok..? Where do we put things- Manager: *halfway out the window* Who knows!!!!! Me: :) Me: I hate this place

This store is so laidback I dont even know who are the interns and who are the workers. No one seems to know what they’re doing. The place is overflowing with crap from some dad’s garage that has been locked up for 10 years. There is 0 organization. I usually hide in the clothing section but the manager wasnt there today and no one knows anything about anything except for her, so I can’t even do my work without her. Everything is hell.

The only one I like out of everyone is the golden labrador named Littlefoot.

It is 11:30 am and today I already:

stood up early

did a 12 minutes Yoga beginner practice

anxiously phoned the firm I’ll intern at to ask for the phone number of my local contact person

had healthy breakfast

anxiously phoned the local contact person to let her know that I’m not sure yet when my exam for uni’ll be and that I’ll probably have to check out of work spontaneously sometime in my first week (it was fine she was nice and thanked me for the notice, offered me the Du and reaffirmed my starting time for the internship)

now I’m gonna have even more coffee and an orange and watch the new critrole episode and tonight we’re playing with one of our DnD groups #bless

Collections Work

Sometimes, most of the times, collections work in museums is a bizarre mix of trying to figure out what your museums actually has, quietly cursing those who came before you and had a completely different method of doing something, and questioning why on earth something is in your collection at all.  Recently, all three of these things have happened to me. Working as an intern at a small museum that is changing from just being a historical society to becoming a full fledged museum means a lot of collections work. You have to basically figure out what you have, and what will be going onto some of the museum’s permanent exhibits. Now and days, most museums has a program that is pretty standard on what you put where making things easier. But before that they used paper donation sheets, and to some extent those are still used. The problem with that though is-- paper work can get lost, and for quite a few objects I’ve cataloged have been lost. This means I basically, I have to create them a new number that is attached with their old accession number and just write what I see.   Even though we still have a standard program at this point everyone uses it a little bit differently, and sometimes I create a new number for something, and then realize, at some point someone put the first two parts of the accession number in and just.... put the other items in the  description, but never actually in the catalog...meaning I have pointlessly created a new number. Cue internally screaming.  Recently, I accessioned  a pencil. Yes, you read that right.  I accessioned a pencil. To be specific, an orange colored pencil. That was added to our collection in the 90′s. Why? I don’t know. My boss doesn’t know. It’s in our collection though and the year it was accessioned is one of our missing years of paper work (though we actually do have the accession paper work for this pencil, making it more confusing.)  Collections work had it’s upsides though! I got to accession two very cool, old lunch boxes recently too for the school exhibit. So there are silver linings in everything

Might I just say; if you’ve got a thing that will one day end up archived and preserved for future generations, be it a journal, a newspaper, a yearbook, or whatever else; please put your name on it, so that the poor archivist snooping into your personal life in 140 years doesn’t have to put down your name as “George, surname unknown”
