this has led to miscarriage care being heavily mismanaged / compromised (2.8% increase in patients being sent home to wait and see; 2.2% decrease in medication management; and a 13.8% jump in misoprostol-only treatment, which is safe but not the standard of care in US and may take longer, resulting in more discomfort)

republicans are trying to make it illegal to ship medications like mifepristone, which are used to safely induce medical abortions (scotus reversed a decision to make it illegal, but lower courts are still fighting)

ob-gyns are leaving, in mass exodus, states with abortion bans which leaves a massive gap in reproductive healthcare

A large part of the reason families were bigger in the past was because marital rape was not considered rape and birth control/abortion methods were ineffective, dangerous and/or illegal. We can dance around this and act like our great great great grandmothers just loveddddd being mamas so much that they decided out of their own free will to have 11 children. I know everybody's focusing on the people openly admitting they're skim-reading but I want to point out that the OP thinks reading "30+ books a year" is insane and unachievable and only possible if you're skim-reading.

Most genre fiction (which is what dominates booktok - mostly romance and psychological thrillers) clocks in at around 60-80k words. That is the length of the first Harry Potter book. Even the longest of booktok's favorites usually clock in at around 100k words, which is about the length of the third Harry Potter book. These are not big books. And let's be real, they're not exactly dense, challenging reads either.

So what kind of tiktok-addled, attention span-rotted, illiterate bullshit is this conversation? Even a slow reader who doesn't have a lot of uninterrupted reading time should be able to finish a book in the span of a week or two. These people claim to like reading. Is it really so insane to imagine that a person who likes reading would, um, read?
