I feel like absolute shit rn, I wonder what got me, was the milk in the office expired? (Likely). Too much hot sauce on my lunch? (No comment). Three double espressos being bad for my health? (I'm a maniac, but it's not my fault work is boring and I need an adrenaline shot to stay awake). Or maybe it's just the air conditioning and sleeping with the windows open...
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as “problematic” in class and our professor was like, “That’s cool, but ‘problematic’ doesn’t really mean anything. It means that the thing you’re describing has a problem, and in and of itself that’s not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else it’s not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like you’re trying to say that this is bad, but you don’t want to say ‘bad.’ Is that right?”
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the “bad” thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, “I’m uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.”
Once we stopped calling things “problematic” and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, “that’s racist” or “that’s misogynistic” or “ew capitalism gross” out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, “Uhhh... I’m not sure what’s so bad?” and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I can’t help but think of this professor being like, “Good starting point, now let’s get specific.” I think when we have to commit to saying “that’s ___” it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever we’re claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes it’s art, and it should be full of problems, because that’s what art is.

I was reading a really long essay recently about the sheer incomprehensible scale of violence that happened during World War II, and among other things, it reminded me that this isn’t the worst time to be alive for the general human population. I can very much picture people during WWII thinking it was the end of days, and for millions of people, it was. Up to 60-75 million people died during WWII, and that doesn’t count those who survived injuries, starvation, occupation, bombings, etc. Millions upon millions of people killed or mentally fucked up for the rest of their lives, and this was after the first World War! Imagine the psychological toll of going through two world wars. None of us really can, nor can we comprehend that body count. WWII was so bad that, just in terms of numbers regarding the death count, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a drop in the bucket. Even the Holocaust didn't make up the majority of the death count, despite killing an insanely high amount of people at an insanely fast pace. It's hard to quantify the worst events in human history, but WWII has to be up there.
Obviously, a shit ton of scholarship has been written on the long-term effects of WWII both on individual societies and the world as a whole, so it's not like the war ended and then everything was fine and dandy, but the fact that human society continued to exist after that at all, and even thrive in some cases, is insane. It's just something to keep in mind as you're inundated with a constant stream of "nothing will ever get better" posts from people clinical depression posting on main. Things were so, so, so much worse not even 100 years ago.

people understand the concept of stolen land irt colonial capture and mass displacement but people rarely move from this idea to its next conclusion: almost everywhere is stolen land. you in your ex-coloniser country are also likely standing on land that people who had previously enjoyed right of habitation on were violently displaced from by ruling classes (classes bc what groups of people were responsible varies country by country). in england this displacement, called the enclosure movement, led to mass starvation of the now landless population who previously could farm on common lands or on pockets of land belonging to the nobility. it acted as the blueprint for overseas colonial privatisation of land and natural resources and the ensuing displacement (if not for the direct murder). you are also standing on land that was stolen from common people
india and ireland are good examples of this kind of privatisation that didn’t feature as much direct settlement on the land by the british (which we can contrast with cases that did, eg north america, but privatisation of land looked very different there for many reasons). much like in england the british destroyed the traditional ways of life of people who had previously had rights to subsist from the land. in ireland peasants only occupied less favourable land and had to farm the one thing that would grow well, potatoes. in india access to common forests and water sources that could act as backup food for years when famine hit were privatised. in ireland the potato blight hit and unable to access other sources of food 1 million people died. in india two droughts about ten years apart caused famines. many people usually weathered those because they had access to different sources of food, but now those had been stolen. between both of these famines I think about 30 million people died. and in both india and ireland these cases of mass starvation happened whilst the british were producing a surplus of food in these countries and shipping them overseas for sale on european markets

children these days not knowing how to type is nuts. theyre on the computer all day. they learn to hunt and peck and can't get past that, how? why are they so stupid? It's because all they do is watch videos. the internet was never supposed to have the moving image on it. it was supposed to be almost entirely text-based. like 90% forums. i taught myself to type when i was 9 bc i wanted to talk on the neopets boards. i just hunt and pecked until i quickly memorized where the keys were and then started actually typing. this is not that hard unless you have a motor issue. they all have motor issues
people being like "oh it's because teachers don't have typing class anymore and don't use typing software" is it? i didn't learn anything in my typing class, i had to be self motivated to actually learn and i was and i did, because i liked being on the computer
my sense is that now children who otherwise don't actually enjoy being on the computer and, if the technological level set in the 90s had persisted forever, never would have used a computer for anything but work and college research, are basically being forced against their will by society to be computer addicts. like, most of the world and their social life is on the computer so they have to be on the computer (to me phone is computer). Because kids who actually enjoy computer are still teaching themselves stuff about computer, like typing and file management and coding. and then everyone else is just like, a prisoner of computer. It's evil, it's awful. Imagine if we forced everyone to paint or play music or lacrosse all day and it was just normal to them that most of your social life took place on the lacrosse field, even though they sucked at lacrosse and had no intrinsic interest in it. But they were held at gunpoint by Big Tech to grow up a lacrosse addict. Is this not insane?
