Meg huffed in annoyance as yet another loud thump from downstairs pierced the air, briefly silencing the tune coming from the radio and causing her to lose her step in time. So what if she was being just a tad bit noisy - she had to practice, for crying out loud. In fairness, learning how to tap dance when one lived in an apartment where the walls were basically made from paper probably wasn’t all that reasonable, but how was she ever going to be able to star in the movies if she couldn’t keep up with Gene Kelly and the likes? Surely Mrs. Alderman could understand that.
She stomped her foot in indignation, a satisfactory smirk crossing her lips as the sound from her tap shoes reverberated throughout the apartment.
Hah. Take that, Mrs. Alderman and her stupid broom.
She had just begun to count herself back into the song when another noise blocked out the radio’s tune, this time a knock instead of the obligatory thump.
She rolled her eyes as she made her way to the door, fully expecting to be faced with the terror that was Gina’s downstairs neighbour.
She pulled open the door, and was instead faced with a man with an extremely bright tie instead of the elderly woman she expected. She spotted the police badge on his belt, and her face creased into a frown.
"Did Mrs. Alderman call you? Are you gonna arrest me for disturbin' the peace or somethin'?" she asked, eyebrows raised. "Because," she lowered her voice, "That woman can be a little...off, if you catch my drift? She's not...all there." She tapped her temple to annunciate her point. "Maybe you should take her downtown instead. She's a menace to society, y'know? Keeps imaginin' things."
That wasn't true, but the last thing Meg wanted was to be dragged down the the police station and for Gina to see her there. She'd be killed - if by her fellow prisoners or her aunt she wasn't sure, but she certainly wasn't too keen on finding out.
