Honest Thoughts on Interstella Remaster
Recently saw Leiji Matsumoto and Daft Punk's Interstella 5555 remastered for the big screen and when my stepdad bought tickets I was thrilled! This has been one of my favourite movies since I was really young, and I was so glad to get to see it in a cinema.
I did not know it was made remastered by generative AI.
There is nothing that could ever happen to make me hate this movie, but I'm so distraught over the utter lack of care taken with a movie this built on effort and sentimentality. Some of the frames looked okay (mainly the ones in extreme closeups or with the futuristic tech that can be a bit otherworldly and uncanny) but it just detracted from the experience.
I have to preface this by saying that I am usually not a picky person, and I still enjoyed the movie, but only because it was Intersetlla and not because of the remaster. Guess I'll be sticking to the USB copy on my computer.
Also I've seen a number of people point out the irony of a movie about artists being exploited and undervalued being 'remastered' by Artificial Intelligence that undermines the original art.
The whole thing is made so much worse with Matsumoto dying and Daft Punk splitting up (although I'm a little biased on that).
URGH anyway had to get it out.
