Credit to /u/Smiix for his Duolingo style Navajo Nation flag as seen here: https://old.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/brp4it/flag_of_navajo_nation_inspired_by_the_flag_from/ This pays homage to the long history of Native Americans and especially Navajo, Hopi and other Southwestern peoples in the United States Marine Corps. The Eagle has been replaced by a thunderbird, and the globe replaced by Smiix's pottery-style design. In this universe, following World War III, the Navajo Nation has risen to regional dominance in the American Southwest with the help of Native American military veterans, a wide variety of volunteers across all ethnicities and wayward Marines, which are all reflected here in their shared heritage. Even though the culture of the Alliance is heavily dominated by the Navajo, they are by no means the only members, and there is a heavy culture of "unity through diversity."

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith's work uses humor and satire to explore the challenges of Native American coexistence with contemporary American culture and its problematic past. In Ghost Dance Dress the various symbols make reference to an intertribal religious movement that emerged in the late 19th century, a time of violent conflict with white settler society. Their leader, Wokova, prophesied that white settlers would vanish and Native Americans would return to take back their land, reasserting their way of life.
