Space!Au Vasco Vday gift 2020
Thank you as always for requesting something from Vasco for Valentine’s day! I had a lot of fun writing this! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did writing it~
By now, Vasco and Kajika have grown to know each other quite well over the years. Vasco has long since grown accustomed to her and learned how to be more comfortable around her. Sometimes, he could be a bit of a late bloomer when it came to befriending some people.
He had a shy side to himself, and he surprisingly didn’t have a high self-confidence stat. Still, having befriended Kajika and hanging out with her during their adventures, he learned to be more honest around her. The navigator was more willing to express himself and his thoughts.
No longer did he shy away as much as he used to when it came to voicing his suggestions on what to do during their adventures into a new world. He often held back because he feared saying something ‘weird’ or ‘lame’. Kajika wasn’t like that, however. Her mind was always open to try something new, and she’d always find a way to make something fun out of anything.
That helped Vasco gain the self-confidence (around her) to start giving his own suggestions.
One could easily say that Kajika was his best friend, and he was the closest to her on the ship. The next person was most probably the captain solely based on the fact that they interacted with each other often. It wasn’t to say that he didn’t get along with the other crewmates, but he wasn’t very comfortable around them.
He didn’t show off his sillier side around them like he did around Kajika. He doesn’t realize it himself, but that doesn’t mean that no one else had noticed. It’s often easier to see something from the outside, rather than the inside, after all.
Today, Vasco kept himself rather idle, because he knew what day it was. It took no genius to know that he was excited. Every year since they’d first started working together, they exchanged gifts with each other over the course of two months.
Valentine’s day and White day.
This was no secret, so the other crew members know about what they did on a yearly basis. As this was the case, people gave Vasco his space, leaving him alone. The ever-painful memory etched into their bones prevented them from approaching him, even if they wanted to.
Vasco had a personality where he got easily excited. He normally tried to hold himself back (because he felt embarrassed), but if you caught him at the wrong moment, you may find yourself a victim of one of his strong back pats.
Teasing the navigator on a day like this would send the medic into a worried tizzy. He understood why he was being avoided, but it didn’t change the fact that much like a dog, he felt lonely rather easily.
When Kajika found him in his room, he was already sulking, but that soon changed because she arrived! He finally had company again! “Hey Kajika.” He greeted her as normally as he could, but the way he was practically abuzz with excitement… it was hard to be ignorant about how he felt.
Even though Valentine’s day was primarily a holiday to celebrate romantic feelings, the two friends used the holiday to validate their friendship with each other. That, was something incredibly important to Vasco. He didn’t have many friends growing up, and so, he valued every single friend he made.
Knowing that someone as amazing as Kajika was his friend was something he felt grateful for every single day. Every waking moment, he could smile knowing that he had a friend to go on adventures with. He liked to think that they had a solid sense of trust between them, and he could confidently say that if it came down to it, he’d lay down his life for her.
In fact, he’s likely already said so to someone else at one point.
Kajika handed him his gift with her warm smile as always. They exchanged a few words of pleasantries before Vasco opened his gift to see what she chose for him this year. In his hands was a portable map drawing kit.
“Ooohhh!~ A portable map drawing kit! This will make it easier for me to map as I go! Thanks, Kajika!” His eyes were shining because of the way the light reflected off the tears welling in his eyes. He’s an emotional guy, you know?
He set down the gift on a side table before he brought Kajika in for a big bear hug. “I love the gift, thank you!”
He always brought his supplied with him when he explored uncharted territories, but it wasn’t very convenient. Often, he would settle for taking pictures of the surrounding areas and commit certain key points to memory.
It was harder to make draw a map later, but it had to be done. It wasn’t like he could always find a stable surface that was large enough for him to set up at.
The portal map drawing kit was useful in the fact that it was compact in size, and the contents of the kit was designed in a way that it could be used with ease assuming you were facing space constraints. That was the biggest issue that came with drawing a map. You didn’t have a large surface to settle down to work on.
The kit was designed so he could get to work in a smaller space. He would need to work on the map in smaller segments, but in this way, he could draft a map while personally surveying the area. This would result in an accurate map. No longer would he have to scrutinize over photographs, or struggle to remember something he committed to memory prior.
“I’ll put this to good use! On the next planet we visit, I’ll use it then! I could even show you how I survey the area and translate that onto a map.” He’d already surveyed the planet they were currently on, and he didn’t want to repeat his work, so he’d have to wait for the next planet.
That’s fine with him, because that gives him another reason to get excited for the next planet! From this point, he had a month to come up with something to gift her in return on White day. “I’ll do my best to get you something great next month!”

As was annual tradition, Kajika had her gift for Vasco all ready and waiting by the time Valentine’s day rolled around, at least according to some calendars of the galaxy, since it couldn’t be helped that some solar systems refused to follow the standards applied by the rest. So on the approximate day in question, gift in hand, she had set out to find her friend.
It had taken some seeking on her part, many of the crew members she asked not having seen him around the ship but finally she had found him in his room. If she had had any concern about him being there for such a extended length at this time of the day, it was quickly waylaid when she saw his excited demeanour upon her arrival.
As always, there were feelings of anticipation mixed with nervousness as she wondered in that brief moment before the gift was revealed whether or not he would like it as much as she hoped he did. Then Vasco was smiling with tears in his eyes, sweeping her in for a hug and she breathed a sigh of relief as she hugged him back.
Kajika was glad that her gift would have a practical use and make his life easier, much like his inter-dimensional storage bag gift did for her. She had figured he would wait until the next planet to try it out, it would be a waste of time to redo the mapping he’d already done for this one, but she still felt a smidgen of disappointment that she wouldn’t get to see him use his gift just yet.
A bright smile appeared on her face at the promise to show her how he went about translating the surrounding terrain, already looking forward to reaching their next destination.
“Once everything on the ship is settled, let’s take a day trip to explore. I’ve heard the next planet has some rather interesting geography which I’m sure you’ll enjoy putting onto paper. We can even pack a picnic~”
Hearing his declaration also made her curious about what he would get her next month but whatever it was, she was sure it would be great considering all the considerate well thought out gifts she had been given thus far.
Gently touching the charm bracelet around her left wrist that he’d given her previously, Kajika gave her companion a teasing wink before snagging his hand and tugging him from the room.
“I’ll be looking forward to it~ In the meantime, let’s go get lunch.”
