The World of Intrepidus

This is a world that has always had superpowers. Even before humanity made a deal with the entities that once roamed the planet, born from humanity itself, there were those who could simply do more, by blurring the line between humanity and what humanity created.

What that deal did was create Avatars, humans granted power in exchange for sating their patrons appetite for human emotion, and as humanity grew so did their power. This did not go unnoticed though — this is not an empty universe and species other than humanity have become interested in Earth, both the potential and threat it represents.

Armed with weapons derived from alien technology, the strange reality-warping powers of the Otherfolk, and Avatars at their strongest, humanity has warded off alien invasion — at least, for now.

Intrepidus Worldbuilding: The Earth Defence Force and Special Ops

The Earth Defence Force was created in the 1990s in response to the increasing size and frequency of alien attacks on Earth. The primary cause of this is believed to be the existence of Entities, with various alien civilisations either wanting to use humanity as weapons or power sources, or seeing them as future threats to other civilisations.

The escalation in the 1990s is thought to be linked to the end of the Cold War and the decreased chance that humanity would wipe itself out. It’s also theorised to be connected to the fact that the human population was growing exponentially and the Entities draw power from humanity.

The EDF is primarily composed of non-powered members equipped with Engineer designs; however most of the fighting during an attack is done by volunteering local Avatars. Non-Avatars with special abilities (such as Combat Engineers) make up Special Ops teams that tackle more subtle missions, while Avatars defend the people.

The EDF Special Ops force is composed primarily of non-Avatar volunteers. Special Ops teams handle missions such as spying, sabotage, technology retrieval, or rescues. As Avatars usually focus on defending population centres from attack in their Principality forms, they’re unsuited for such missions. However, it’s not unheard of for an Avatar to join a mission where their abilities would be especially helpful, as they’d be more of use there than on the front line. Engineers are usually considered vital for Special Ops teams due to their familiarity with alien technology.

Intrepidus Worldbuilding: Otherfolk

Otherfolk are beings that exist in the spectrum between Entities and humanity, having aspects of both. Like Entities, they are influenced and can draw power from human belief, and like humanity they are ultimately mortal, if long-lived. The origin of stories about beings like fairies, vampires, demons, and spirits. Otherfolk are most notable for their ability to inflict conceptual attacks that can bypass most defences. They also have more fluid appearances and abilities than most other beings.

I really need to come up with real names for Intrepidus characters, because right now I just have their codenames which are things like Red/Green Knight (he gets a name change with the superpowers), Shrike, Upgrade/Shard, Verdant, Queen… and some characters don’t even get that much.

Intrepidus Worldbuilding: Engineers

Engineers: Engineers are a set of people with a high capacity to understand and replicate advanced technology. Little is known about why Engineers exist, although there are many theories.

Humans aren’t the only species that can be Engineers, but they have a higher rate of them. Brains scans show slight structural differences that can predict if someone is an Engineer with about 80% certainty.

Most of what Engineers are able to replicate would be extremely expensive or impossible to make on Earth due to a lack of resources and infrastructure, but the scientific understanding gained from such technology has advanced knowledge anyway.

While most Engineers live relaxed lives, being paid to check out scavenged alien technology, some of them, known as Combat Engineers take more active roles, often joining Special Ops teams. The youngest type of Titled.
